Default Tach Sensor/ Running Issue?

Were does the 944 pick up it's tach reading. I'm guessing that it comes out from the speed/ref sensors via the ECU, but I've not seen any data on which sensor it uses or how.

Background and reason: My car died today on the way to school. The starter turns the engine as quickly as normal: enough to read about 2bar of oil pressure, but the tach still reads 0 and the injectors don't sound like thier firing.
