No... gold is more like $600 per ounce (close to $10,000 per pound).

I get mine on eBay -- usually pay around $20-$25 for a 14ounce can. You'll need two cans plus a can of oil to do a complete refill.

If you need 28 oz. then you have an AC problem. AC systems are sealed and should technically never leak (R-134 leaks BADLY due to the pressure and crappy barrier hoses). I have worked on 72 Chevelle's with working original AC.

Not really the thing you wanna try at home I'll try to find the PCA article.

Maybe but Goble did show that the mineral oil spray from a big AC leak will burn very well indeed, propelled by propane or R12 or whatever (think flamethrower.) If it's a small leak, I doubt it would ever reach a concentration that could burn. Personally I do not consider the risk significant, unless your system is leaking the stuff fast, and then it'd be useless anyway. There are lots of people running propane or hydrocarbon drop-ins happily, one or two incidents are probably not a big consideration. At any rate it would be dumb to put anything into a leaking system or a system that is totally down without fixing the leaks and replacing the dryer. If the system is depressurized and you just filled it back up, it'd have too much moisture in it to work and would just destroy itself trying.

Of course, Goble did win an Ig Nobel prize for his expiriments in lighting charcoal grills with liquid oxygen (now definately don't try _that_ at home)
He stopped advocating propane in R12 systems right around when he invented R406a/Autofrost, a drop in R12 replacement that cost more than $2 a pound :-)
