tie rod end removal
suggestions?i got the ends off the spindle. Now need to get the actual end off, cant seem to unscrew it from the tie rod. Tried usual...penetrating oil, and heat didn't help. Is the only way to hold the rod steady with the 13 mm wrench? there is a place where you can place the wrench near the end of the rod. it doesn't have enough grip to REALLY try and muscle the end free.

so you are trying to get the outter tie rods off? i did it by using two adjustable wrenches and securing one to the tie rod end, and then one on the bolt that secures it. worked great just really use the wrenches to push against eachother.

Okay, before Matt H jumps on here and says beat it with a hammer... you have options:
1. Beat it with a hammer!
2. Rent/Purchase a pittman arm/tie rod end puller. It attaches to the knuckles and you ratchet on top of the indentation to push the tie rod end out of the knuckle.
3. Use a pickle fork but be cautious as to not screw up the tie rod end if you plan on reusing it.
Like I said before in a previous post, the hardest part is getting the new nut on if the rod end spins. Make sure it's pressed up pretty snugly, as in, use a floor jack to press up underneath it carefully and moderately tap the side of the knuckle to seat it.
Good luck.

Do not use a pickle fork, it will break the rubber and the magic goo will leak out. Ask me how I know.
If using the tie rod end puller, make sure the castle nut is on there to keep the point of the tie rod tool in place. If not the threaded part WILL deform and the tool will slip off. Then you need to use the BFH to remove it. No matter...the rubber is already boogered up (see above).
