Default manual steering rack

Does the manual steering rack have a different turn ratio than the power? Is it a little quicker or are they the same?

Just wondering.

Thanks,

It's a slower ratio so you get more mechanical advantage.

I beieve the PS is 3 turns lock to lock while the Manual is 3.5. The smaller the turns lock to lock the more power is needed to turn the wheel, hence why the manual is larger.

Someone correct the ratios if wrong.

Manual Rack is 22.39:1, 3.8 Turns to lock

Power Rack is 18.85:1, 3.2 Turns to lock

Is the ratio the only difference between a power rack and manual?

So, it sounds like the power has a more desirable ratio for sport driving, No? Except for the leaks that is.

The power ratio does make steering abit quicker, however, many people like the road response from a manual setup.

I recently noticed that the 944spec guys seem to prefer the disabled power-steering setup over true manual steering setup because of the ratio. I've been putting off on going to true manual steering for that reason.

Joe, thats what I am running right now and have been for a few thousand miles and I love it. I have taken everything power off except for the rack. You barely notice the differnce except during sharp and hard cornering. I also am using a slightly smaller steering wheel.

I should note I dont track the car very much, but I do alot of city driving and get around very well.

Same here for the past year -- due to a leaky high pressure line. But I definitely notice the lack of power for city driving (lots of parallel parking on hills in San Francisco....).

Oy, tell me about it. Thankfully I rarely drive it around the city..

Can you believe Chris parks his disabled-power-steering two blocks over from Lombard?!? That takes *****...

Yea, but his street is so steep, that it's perpendicular parking, which is much easier.

Would something like this work with the 944 power rack?

Thanks all, I actually thought the manual had a quicker ratio, but it's cool the power does. I just manualized my power. Removed the fluid and packed it with grease. I haven't driven it yet with it totally manualized, I broke a hard line going to the clutch slave, nobody carries it except Porsche at $80. I couldn't find anyone to build me one either. Hopefully by Thursday it'll be back on the road.
