Kumho ECSTA 711 and tread wear
Here is a picture of the tire.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/BigPic...omCompare1=yes
What makes me worry is that there is very little tread depth at the edges.
Let me refraze it: what worries me is that when I take it to a shop next summer, they will refuse to mount them claiming they are gone, even if I had them used fo 10 miles only.
This is the design, and how will I be able to defend my case?
At what points the tread depth should be measured in this tire ?
Opinions of guys who are associated with tire shops would be expecially appreciated.

Get them if you llike, but these tires suck.
Much better off trying something else. Remember, for street tires I don't expect much more than keeping the chassis off the ground and I would never consider buying these again.

I currently run KUMHO ECSTA Supra 712. They seem a little too soft and wear fast. With the fair amount of rain I have seen here in recent weeks, just a little too much pedal and a spinning they go.
If your looking for cheap then sure, but you get what you pay for. I won't be using this brand again.

I thought the Fuzion ZRi's were a direct competitor with those tires?...
I use the ZRi's and am 100% satisfied with them. Cheap, sticky and they wear very well.
If you have 15" rims I believe the HRi's are almost identical, just made in smaller sizes.

check into khumo MX if looking for a true performance andreasonably priced tire.... do some reading and look at reviews.. I think you will find the MX a far beeter tire well worth the 20-35 extra for each.
IMO ECSTA are simply junk in the world of real performance tires. Cheap, high speed tire, great for low power street performance.... or if on a real tight budget.
The MX on the other hand is a true supercar/exotic performance class tire well worth consideration.

I've been fortunate enough to have gone through a number of tires on my 944. I went through a cheap tire phase where I had Yoko ES100, Kumho 712, and Kumho MX one right after another. The 712 was the shortest lived of the bunch and I thought it had the least appealing in appearance on the car. The Yoko ES100 was a nice street tire (rain's not an issue here) and looked good, but the Kumho MX beat it out completely in terms of performance (AX and TT). Price to performance it's hard to beat the MX. I still have a set of MX for the car.
The tread depth at the sidewall shouldn't be a concern. I think once the wear bars start appearing in the tread a tire shop might start pointing it out and encouraging you to get new tires.
Regards,
Kevin

He is dealing with a 15" wheel, some of your recommendations arent even made in the sizes he needs.

after reading the above and the related threads, I'm 100% sure I have no idea what to do
Especially that some of the recommendations suggest 205 instead of 215, which would be a considerable downgrade, even if the tire model was a little better.
Not much to choose from in 225/50 15 either.

Stan,
I currently run Kumho 711's on my VW. Unfortunately that is what I bought the car with. The tores are horrible! They are H rated tires and in colder weather they turn into icecubes and just spin, there is no traction at all. During the summer the tires are OK and seem to hold pretty well but I wouldn't buy them second time around. If anything try to go for the 712's are they are a much better tire for the $.
Good luck!

Interesting observation, the 711 sucks, the 712 is quite possible the biggest POS ever built...could it be that Kumho's suck? Who knew?
Stan, PM me if you want to actually talk about tires.
