Help w/944S motor swap into 944
After I spun the #2 bearing in my 8V motor I bought an '87' 944S motor to replace it. I got everything from the bellhousing to the airbox including the DME, and harness. I just got it all installed but it won't start. I searched some of the old threads and I believe I need to make some minor wiring changes. Has anyone done this and can guide me.
Thanks in advance!

Hi, I am using the flywheel and bellhousing from the 'S' motor. I bought the motor complete including the DME, harness, AFM, airbox, intake, and header. The only thing I think I'm missing is the coil, and the black ignition box that is in the driver's side behind the headlight. I've got that box and the coil coming. Do you know if I need to make any wiring changes or any other changes?
Thanks in advance!

Stand alone. Have you checked spark and fuel? Does it crank over at all? If your getting fuel...how much PSI?
I guess we need more information on what youve checked and exactly what its doing vs. the already known (wont start).
Sounds like you have one of the 2 above missing? More info.

Hi, it cranks fine but doesn't start at all. I started checking the usual stuff. The first thing I checked was the DME relay even though it was fine before the swap. I jumpered 87b-87-30 and it still won't start.
I next checked the coil. I get 12 volts at both posts (#1 and #15) on the coil. I also have 12 volts at the injector for cyl #1. I didn't bother checking the other injector wires.
The distributor cap and so is the wire from the cap to the coil. I also checked the plugs cleaned and regapped them.
I haven't checked for fuel pressure yet. This car was my daily driver until the swap so I'm confident that the fuel pump is good. I hate pulling the fuel lines into the rail to check pressure :-) For a second I'm assuming its ok.
I heard on one of the other forums that I'm missing an ingition module. It's a small black box that is mounted behind the driver's side headlight. I'm hoping that is true. But I'm also not sure about wiring changes. Do you know if there are
Thanks in advance for your help!

Well, I guess the 944S ignition system is different than that of a NA 87 944. I cant find any information for you on this. Sorry.
Its pretty easy though. Your engine needs 3 things to run...Spark, Air and fuel. If you take the spark plug boot off and get no spark, then you know you have ignition issues. But, if your getting spark, you have a fuel issue.
I would make sure you dont have spark by literally seeing that there is no spark. Either by a timing gun or by taking the boot of and having someone crank it.
Besides that, I cannot find anything on an ignition module behind the drivers side headlight. If your asking about the Ignition Control Module, then yes, it wont run without it. But I thought you got the whole package
Is this what were talking about??

The black ignition box is definately the part I'm missing. I should have it this weekend. But, quick question. What does it connect to? Does it go over and connect back to the coil or where?
Thanks in advance!

I will now :-) How long is the harness and where does it connect to? Without seeing it I assume is swings over to the passenger side of the engine and connects up to the coil. Am I offbase on that?

BTW, I got the resisitor. I mounted it in the proper place under the cruise control motor on the passenger side in front of the battery.
I appreciate everyone's help on this. I thought I got everything but this is my first 16v 944 motor and I'm learning as I go.

I can not give you a answer on that. I have parted out a couple of S cars, and have done 2 engine exhanges, but I never took the time to see where the harness plugged up for the ingition control module.
