Default Re-covering the gear lever

Has anyone done it? There appear to be plenty of kits available (for 924/944/968) which include the leather for the gear lever/boot.

They all claim a perfect fit, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with any and can attest to the quality / accuracy / service.

Thanks in advance.

I've seen a couple home made jobs...they were either just hanging around the shifter area (they were that crude) or taped on.

I don't really have any first hand testimony on the more "professional" ones.

Maybe some one else here can?

I did it with the Alan Gunn kit. It was tighter than I expected on the bezel that snaps into the console. I could barely get it on. Even now the boot is a little twisted. The seam in the shift boot is not centered at the bezel. Also, I needed burgandy and their burgandy didn't really match the Porsche Burgandy. I sprayed it with some SEM color coat and now its a perfect match. It looks 100 times better than my ratty old shifter.

I put one on my old 944 once and it was so tight to get over that bulbus part of the shifter that the stitching split wide open, i was pissed. i super glued the stitching back together and it ended up looking pretty good.

Just put the rennbay boot on mine a couple weeks ago. Looks and fits pretty well overall, the only place it seems a tad loose is right under the **** in the front, it feels just a little bit loose... I guess that is normal seeing as how they have to slide over the **** in the first place. Overall I don't have any complaints...

I ordered one from Paragon I think, it may have been performance products. They are a pain to put on because it's so tight but just keep at it very slowly. Also, spray some leather shrink on it before you slide it on and will conform better after a few weeks. After you have it all the way on and the seam is centered, trim the inner edge where the cap snaps down and it will fit perfect. Did mine a few years ago and it looks like new!

I got a leather boot from Performance Products and I had to trim the excess leather at the inside stitched seam a little so it would not make so much of a bulge in the leather at the ****. Also the elastic band they put at the bottom of the boot is too wide and doesnt fit correctly into the console plastic insert. Anyone else have a good fix for the elastic band problem?

I did the Rennbay kit as well. It was rather loose (which made it install easily) and I was concerned at first. But it's been almost two years with no complaints, so I'm happy.

AGLA is where mine is from, It took awhile to fit it around the top but its nice and tight which matters. The loose ones just don't look right.

Well, Ive tried on a few ocassions over the last year or so to fit the "turbo" script and new boot into my shifter *** with no sucess. I can only describe this task as excruciating. Does anyone have pics of the easist way to do this? I

I did the Performance Products piece. I had to trim the inside seam to fit smoothly on the ****. It bunched-up around the cap, making it hard to seat the cap. Last but not least, the elastic always comes off if I shift into 1st or reverse.

On an unrelated note, the idea of installing the leather reminded me of scene from some old western of Lone Ranger episode. Indians tie some cowboy to 4 stakes in the ground using wet strips of leather. As the leather dries in the sun, it shrinks stretching the cowboy's arms and legs.

So, I wonder. Can a replacement boot that is seemingly too tight be made to fit by soaking it in water?

You could install it while it's wet. As it dries it would shrink and conform to the ****.

What do you think?

BINGO! I believe its even in the instructions (as crappy as they are!) that come with the AGLA- Alan Gun kit).

Just me though........I won't do business with AGLA anymore. I got the screw around on a wheel recover, like you wouldn't believe, and lots of promises.......only to just "let it go".

Wet it down GOOD, if ya have a tight one. Soak the entire upper boot in water if ya have to. Just my suggestion. After its back on and dry after a few days.........treat it good with leather conditioner. Personally, I don't want the leather up around that upper ****......wears out to fast.......from my panic grips!
