Hi Mike, here are a couple of photos to show what's going on in there. The bolt on top is what holds the reverse gear lever in place (green arrow in 1st photo). Note how this piece is bolted in. The second photo shows this same bolt on top of the exterior of gearbox. If this bolt backs out of the reverse lever, the lever drops down and prevents the reverse/5th gear shaft (white arrow, 1st photo) from sliding forward and aft. The last photo shows the gearbox assembled. It can be fixed but you would really need the factory shop manual to do it correctly.....

Great pictures Mike, that about as clear as anyone could want. Out of curiousity is there also a phillips head on that bolt? I was working from memory when I posted. I've never been inside the case.

I had to peek at the shop manual... I was incorrect above, the hex head bolt is not the one holding in the lever. It is the low profile phillips head bolt that holds it in. The hex head bolt holds in the spring and detent for the reverse/5th gear rod (my rebuild was about a year ago - my great memory...). It is also possible that this detent thing is somehow screwed up and preventing the shaft from moving. Worth a look. Thanks for catching that Steve.

OK, I certainly did not touch that bolt with the green arrow.... The ONLY bolts touched were the small 10mm on the "block" where the shifter is and the 13mm on top of the linkage. If you guys could read my thread:

https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/275428-okay-cannot-get-reverse.html

and give me an idea of what to do. Should I remove the linkage and see whats up?? Is there any way to shift the transmission into reverse @ the transmission to see if it at least goes in? I'm certain (if the 2 bolts I mentioned don't do anything bad) I didn't do anything to the transmission that would cause the lever to be f'ed up...

thanks
mike
