Default 951 Transmission won't shift into 5th or Reverse

I have a "project" tranny that I just bought on Ebay. The tranny I bought won't shift into 5th or Reverse. It supposedly shifts fine into the other gears. Its a 951 non-lsd tranny. I only paid $100 for it and want to use it as a learning tool. I do VW transmissions now.

It seems like its probably shfter fork or something else in the internal shifter mechanism. Is this a common failure? What are the likely causes?

Thanks, John

Also if anyone has a trashed transmission that might have the needed parts, please e-mail me. I will receive the transmission in about a week and start the teardown.

Try 5th and reverse on the bench . I've seen people get the 13 mm bolt for the shifter in the wrong spot . Verify it's really inside the tranny .

Thanks, that's the first thing i'll try. The seller did say that he swapped in another transmission and it cured the problem.

I take out ribs and Barbeque from Sarge's every couple of weeks. Were you here in the Marines?

Searching for my problem (no reverse) came across this thread. JIM @ Eurowerks are you talking about the 13mm bolt on top of the linkage (on top of the trans?) thanks

Didn't catch the first time around. I visited several times from Oceana.

5th and reverse are operated by the same rod in the transmission so it sounds like this is a good bet.

There is an large exterior bolt (on top) that can become loose in transit or normal use. If it gets backed off past a certain point the lever for 5th and reverse flips over and you have to remove the rear section. This screw was finger tight on a 951 trans I sold. I told the buyer, "Whatever you do, do not remove this large bolt with the car out of gear" I see a post that night, curiosity killed the cat and he ended up having to drop the trans one more time.

Whoa, Steve. What bolt is this? The 13mm nut on top, the 17mm on the other side of the 13mm nut?? The small 10mm ?? The 17mm on the side of the 13mm nut? Sorry I can't give better descriptions but I am not going to be pleased to drop the trans. I didn't remove any bolts.

It's the one that has a strange looking Phillips head on it. My shop manual with photos is at work. I'll see if I can find a pic or contact Dmitry S. He was the curious one and could describe it better.
