Default New record time for headgasket change

One of my techs and I were joking about the labor time for a headgasket job on a turbo. So he timed me 2 hours 23 mins start to finish when I closed the hood. I was movin!

Yeah... until you start it and the hood overflows with chocolate milkshake...

I take it you didn't resurface the head?

regardless... that is crazy fast!

head checked out ok it was recently resurfaced, parallels showed no low spots at all. It helps when you do it for a living everyday!

That is an awe inspiring record. Does this include any prep work to remove head studs, removing old gasket, etc.?

On a turbo?...
Crazy.
Did it have the saturn exhaust studs?...
What shortcuts did you take to help speed it up?

Did the car run afterwards? lol Seriously, thats WAY fast and I'm assuming you weren't doing things like resealing the cam tower or belts/rollers, etc, and you left the exhaust in place, right?

Regards,

your car or a customer car?

it certainly makes it easier to have a replacement head laying around or was this a come back from the head resurfacing/gasket/previous work?

Wow, I wouldn't mind paying those labor charges...

It took my dad and I a whole 6 weekends to do it. But that included all gaskets, injector cleaning, replacement of cooling pipe, and a few helicoils.

pulledthe entire exh manifold off. the cam tower seals etc front seals etc are all fresh, I got greedy with my boost controller. My vac lines are a cinch now between removing the venturi tube and laust's manifold. I remove the fuel rail with the intake just remove the fuellines and the 2 cam tower bolts that secure the rail. Remove the six bolts from the header to crossover pipe. intercooler tubes and slip the timing belt off after removing the distributor housing. I set the motor to tdc later. I don't disturb the bal belt or acc belts. I leave the heater core hard line in place just take it loose at the waterpump. the block required verylittle prep as the gasket came off clean. I checked the head with a parralell for flatness cleaned all the parts up. and reassembled it. It was my car and I've been there plenty of times! I would never try to do it that quick on a customer's car!

WHAT? I am impressed....... with your repair time...... perhaps not your restraint.
I would say you have been there.... I would wager to say too much boost, too often
You could always O-ring, then who knows where the weakest link will be

I have been forcing myself away from boost controller...... I am weak

That's amazing - I could never do it that fast mostly because I get that "while-I'm-in-here-I-might-as-well-obsessively-clean-every-exposed-part-of-the-engine-with-toothbrushes" syndrome.

Nice job, regardless!
