Default Glass guy here and windshield doesn't fit! Help!

Search has been iffy of late with the server upgrade... but I 'attempted' to have my windshield replaced this morning by safelite.

After cracking the glass even more than it was, the tech attempted to place the PPG replacement windshield, only to find it was at least an inch too narrow. No way it could ever have sealed.

After consultation with the base office, I was told that the only windshield that will fit is the antenna one at double the price, since it is a different size. Now I want to call BS on that since it's not likely they made two different pillar widths for the two types. Besides, numerous other late 944 'listers have installed non-antenna glass with no issue.

I was told the antenna glass type is 'FW 505' and the non-antenna is 'FW-360', which are not the same width. Again, the glass manufacturer was PPG.

So as I sit, the tech is re-installing my now horribly cracked original windshield with a non-Porsche universal seal, leaving me worse than before.

What's my next step. Dump safelite? Pay the 440 they want for antenna glass (the car will be track use with no radio)? Should I argue? Help a guy out!

They brought the windshield for an early model car if its too narrow.

They do make a non-antenna windshield for a late model car, i dont know what the model # of it is.

I reccommend finding another glass shop if they arent going to help you.

Well sad to say but earl 83-85 cars and the 924S use the cheaper windshield. The 85.5 and later cars use a different antenna windsheild. No not much can be done.

Just be happy you did not get in to the issue of airbag windshield vs non airbag windshield.

There's a non-airbag vs. airbag windshield? Geez. Glad they still make all the variations for cars that are 15 plus years old!

I'm pretty sure that the airbag windsheilds are reinforced somehow. Something about how the pass airbag will press up against the glass or something and could shatter it.

Air bag windshield has a strip of rubber along the bottom. If you try to install the air bag one in a non air bag car the bottom of the windshield will stick out too far and the wipers will hit it.

They brought the air bag one for my 86 and had to uninstall it, cut the rubber piece off then install it again. The rubber is the only difference.

I got a non antenna windshield for my 86 from safe-lite about a year ago and encountered this air bag problem. $265 installed on site. Since then, the prices from safe-lite have increased considerably.

I am not too concerned about what happens to the winsheild if the airbags pop.

Of course I got this thing used about 5 years ago and it has two large cracks in it that I have gathered over the years. One day it will be replaced.

Sorry, I found one of Techno Duck's posts here
and from the sound of this and other posts there ARE other non-antenna LATE MODEL fitment windshields.

Can anyone who has one tell me a brand or part number? Or just show me that what I've read is wrong and that ONLY an antenna part will fit.

It seems stupid to pay double for an antenna windscreen when I won't even have a radio. Thanks again to those who reply!

schawnk, they do make a non-antenna windshield for a late model car. I cant remember who makes it but can check for you in a few hours. I dont think they gave me a part # or anything on the invoice. They made the same mistake when they came to replace mine (i didnt use Safelite, but a local company instead). The guy tried to make the early style fit, but the gap is huge and no gasket would seal it correctly (plus its just the wrong one!).

It came out to about $190 total for the windshield installed, with a slight discount (i think less tax) since it was done at my fathers shop.

PM sent about the wheels, let me know if you still want them.

WOW those are cheap prices compaired to my replacement.
Since we have $0 deductable glass insurance here in AZ I required the OE Sekuit (SP) glass. The bill was a touch over $800!!!!
