Default How much work is this

Looking at a very nice 1984 924, very clean up top and in engine compartment. Needs to be tuned. Had a mechanic look at it today and he put it up on a ramp. This is what he said. (He is a bit of a perfectionist.)

Diff leaking (seal?)
One half-shaft leaking (boot?)
Leak at gearbox
None of these leaks are big he said.

Suspension very stiff.
Rubbers are hard.
Wishbones rusted.
Consequently steering stiff but no actualy steering problems or bent bits etc.
Underbody rusty but nothing huge.

Before I buy this (very nice) car I would be grateful if you guys could give me an idea of what I am looking at. Are these significant problems? Are these big jobs, parts or labour? I want this car to regularly do a 50 mile run (25 there and back).

Thanks
Ed.

No I mean a ("$. I am in Ireland. However I think the basic issues are the same. How much work is involved in repairing the seals and how important is it to fix the leaking half-shaft. Can the rubber bushes be replaced or does something bigger have to go instead?
Thanks
Ed.

"regularly do a 50 mile run?" How regularly?

I think the first question would be (other then is it a 924 or 944), is: are you familiar with the standard, regular maintaince that these cars require?

I hate it when my rubbers get hard.

is ("$ just the numbers being typed with the shift key on? then that means that being in ireland your 2 is a " here in the USA a 2 is the @ sign. so he means a 924, not a 944, because if it were a 944 there would be two dollar signs such as ($$ what he really means is a (@$ or 924. i hope you guys followed that even though i lost myself a couple times while writing it...haha

924. 50 miles three times a week. 9000 miles a year at least. I want to drive it.

I am fairly familiar with the maintenance. Still wondering how much work is involved. What is eassily fixable, what is important to do straight away.
Thanks
Ed.

With proper mantence these cars will last quite a long time and be fairly reliable, i however would suggest that you also try going to www.924.org as they are be more familiar (ie wealth of info) with the early 924's (ie audi engine / tranmision). When u enter the site they have a discussion are much like rennlist. Good luck

I'm not sure an 84 924 has a galvanized body. If not, rust could become a real issue.

50-mile round trips are nothing. As long as maintenance is taken care of, I'd argue that these cars are more reliable than most.

Thanks guys
What about my original question. How much work is involved in replacement of the boots on the cv joints and drive shaft seal on the diff? Can I have a go or should I leave it to the professionals?
Thanks.
