Operation Rat's Nest (the wiring harness)

OK kids, I'm about to undertake a new project for my car: cleaning, restoring, and mapping the wiring harness.
The plan is to lay out the harness and remove all the currently wrap. I will then clean it all and inspect it. Any wires or connectors requiring replacement will be replaced. I want to map out where each branch of the harness goes and where it terminates. I want to identify each connector and what it's for.
Lastly, once all this is done, all of the wires I will not be using (this is a race car remember) will get the connectors covered with shrink tubing and tie-wrapped to the harness. The harness will be covered with split loom to protect it.
Does anyone know if anybody has laid out a harness previously and identified each of the connectors? I haven't seen anything like this in the past and if it has already been done I won't reinvent the wheel (and it will save me some time).
BTW, this will be a 84 harness.
Oh, and once this is done I'll post the results with photos of the harness, connectors, and where all the wires go.

I would just remove the harness in one piece and then wire the car yourself using a fuse block and a few relays.
I did it the way you are proposing on my track car, and I wish I would have just started from scratch, and sold the harness.

Sadly I cannot do that. The rules require a stock, unmolested wiring harness. The only thing I can do is to make "factory approved" repairs. I read that to mean factory connectors and same gauge wires. I can even see how some would consider disconnecting the unneeded items illegal, but I'm going to do it anyway.

I'm in the process of wiring a new engine harness. I rewired the charging starting system with great success. The upside of the engine harness is that it's not covered with that ridiculous black sticky tape. Good luck with that.

Carl @ 928 motorsports does this regularly, maybe he can give you some advice. http://928motorsports.com/parts/944wiringharness.php
I also did this on my 928, but because all the wires in the harness were baked crisp! I found a lot of the connectors and metric wires at www.eagleday.com
G'Luck!

I'm doing the same thing with my 83. I'm taking out anything that doesn't need to be there, like stereo, radar unit, alarms, and some goofy *** cellular system the PO had installed. Best of luck, and I'm looking forward to your pics. I've taken some of my own, but the thread is over on the 'other' board
