Flat tow suggestions?
I was going to flat tow a 944 parts car today from SF to LA, but I backed out at the last minute b/c I started getting worried about braking. My tow vehicle can pull -- I've trailered cars many times now. But is towing w/o brakes on the towed vehicle safe? Is it even legal? I know you have the same issue when you use a Uhaul tow-dolly and people do it all the time. It seemed fine for around town towing, but when we start talking highway speeds and braking downhill, I don't want to risk jackknifing.
Anyone with any experience on this have input?
PS: I've done a search already. Heck, I've even found this:

If any wheels of the vehicle being towed touch the ground, it has to be currently registered or it will be impounded. Its easier to rent a car trailer for $50 a day with surge brakes and done with the whole deal.

Yea, I have a solution in mind for the registration issue -- it's nice having another car of the same model in the same color....
Another reason why I'm contemplating a tow bar, is that it would be nice to have a way of having to rent a trailer everytime I want to tow a p-car. It seems like I'm doing it once every other month now....

I've towed all my parts cars on a 3000lb (empty weight) double axle 32' trailer with a tacoma, jeep grand cherokee, and range rover, none of which have good brakes... and the trailer has NO brakes...
Gone 2 hours+ and no problems. just take it easy you'll be fine.

remove the front bumper and rotate the bumper shocks 90'
any universal tow bar should linbe right up with the bumper shockholes. Substitue bolts & locknuts for the hitch pins.
I towed my 944S with no problems this way. Takes about 10-20 minutes total to remove bumper and attach tow bar.

Joe, yeah it was alot of weight. I think we kept it to a max of 65mph or so on the way home but wasn't much of a problem. Obviously you can't stop nearly as fast as normally.. but if you just keep an eye out ahead it should be alright.

So that's exactly what I've done so far, except I couldn't figure out the best way of braking -- especially down a long stretch of downhill.... It would be so cool if I can figure out SAFE and EASY way of running 944 recovery missions.
