Default Konis VS OEM Boge

I am in the marked to replace my OEM Boge struts with new ones. I was considering the Konis because that seems to be the thing to do however, I spoke to a vender today and he told me that a new set of the OEM Boge struts would be cheaper and comperable to a new set of Konis. Is that true? Would I be wasting money getting the Konis?

Really depends on what you are going to use them for (primarily that is). I really think for what you get, the Koni is a good bang for the buck!

I have the Boges on my '86 and I've done quite a few DE and autox events. I dont mind them, they feel alright in both situations.. but if I were going to upgrade I'd probably save my dollars and get one a set of the nicer coilover setups (probably koni or bilstein). But then again, it may depend on if you're replacing versus upgrading.

If ypu want to upgrade, go ahead and get the Koni's from Paragon. It sounds like your current set up is worn out, so both probably would help, BUT if you are like me, you'd rather get it done right each time the opportunity arises. So save the labor time/money and go ahead and upgrade. My .02. YMMV

Are these the sealed replacements? If so, get the koni conversion from Paragon and do it up! That's what I did!

I recently faced this same decision, and decided to go with a Koni coil over setup all around, as recommended by our local PCA's cheif DE instructor and 944 racer. I too am looking to get into more DE events, but will be driving it mostly on the street here in MI (really crappy streets BTW).

Yea, the price was pretty much double what the stock strut replacements were going to be, but I figure it's worth it 'cause while I was at it, I've doubled the stock spring rates both front and rear and I've elected to replace the rubber upper strut mounts with metal mono-ball mounts as well as replacing all the rubber bushings. So call things considered, perhaps not a bad package deal.

eohrnberger,
Did you have to re-index your torsion bars when you added the coil over set on the rear suspension? If so, how difficult is that to do? I have a set of coil overs for my 951 but haven't installed them. I wasn't sure about how to do the re-indexing and if I could do it my self.

Yea, but try and find Bilsteins for an S2! My preference too. Seems like they just dropped out of that market segment. Don't know if the Turbo struts would have fit or not, which is what they do sell. But if it would fit, wouldn't they list the S2 as a target vehicle for the parts as well?

Well, we'll see when I get to it perhaps as early as this weekend. Right now, I've got all the parts sitting in the garage in their shipping boxes. Let you know later.

I would go for Koni inserts (8641 1414 Sport) for the fronts struts and simple Konis (8040 1035 Sport) at the back. They are adjustable and will be definitely better than the Boge. With 968 M030 sway bars and shorter springs you should then be fine.
I would keep coilovers for serious track driving.

Thinking of lowering springs too but am not sure what is ontherer now. some say 200lb springs and others say 160lbs. I would also like to lower the car but don't want to start with ball joints.

Dan,
Dont bother with the springs. I spoke to henry about that when i put the konis in my red S2 back in 03.

once you start that you will have a bitch of a time getting everything balanced. that was the bottom line.

i put the konis in, and wish my gray s2 had them. i would put them in if i didnt need tires, have the miata to play with , and didnt just buy a helmet i dont really need.

Does anyone daily drive on Konis? The backs sound simple to do, I'd change them out when the car needs it.

My dad put Koni yellows in his Fiat 850 35 years ago and said I shouldn't put them in mine. He went through motor mounts, the metal near the mount points for the shocks was tearing, etc. Then again, I'd like to think the 944 is a little more solid than a Fiat.
