how to depressurize the fuel system?

I need to remove the intake manifold in order to reseal the upper balance shaft cover, and it probbaly requires disconnecting the fuel lines. I already took of the front belts and sprockets, so I can't crank the engine with the relay out.
Would it be relatively safe to unscrew the front cap of the fual rail, and hope to catch the cap and the ball into a bag or something?

Remove the fuel pump relay, crank car over a few times. If it starts let it run until it dies, if it doesnt then crank a few times, that will greatly reduce the spray.
Fuel should be put in a glass container or a flammable safe plastic, it will melt regular plastic (like a plastic cup for example).

I've pulled tons of rails and fuel lines off of cars and I haven't ever performed the depressurization steps. it never seems like there is some dramatic spray of fuel, more of just a slow dribble...knock on wood I suppose.

Then ask yourself how you are going to do that? Answer, you arent. Therfore, you are screwed so I would open that as slow as humanly possible and get yourself a fire extinguiser (B,C type). Be incredibly careful.

Oh, and Swag is right, for the most part the 944 does not spray fuel all over the place.

If the car has been sitting for more than a couple hours (I would assume so if you took off the belts), then the system should be mostly depressurized. Just have lots of rags handy to soak up the little bit of fuel that will come out.
