Aftermarket seats + stock seatbelts. Is this possible?
Hey guys,
I was looking at some El Cheapo sport seats. Sat in them, looked at how they were built...they should do just fine for me. My car is not a dedicated track car though, and I want to retain the stock belts and piggyback harnesses.
My question is this...I noticed that on the outside of the seats, the belts bolt into the body of the car. But on the inside, they bolt into the seats (not the tunnel).
So...does this mean that it's impossible to retain stock seatbelts with an aftermarket seat, if the seat has no provision for a bolt to hold the seatbelt? Let me know! Thanks!

with quality seats, or at least name brands, their sliders come with a bracket welded on for the seatbelt. I am running the stock seat belts only right now on the FX1-pros.
For the record, I really don;t recomend those seats. FOrget the build quality and danger, your gonna be upset oyu bought them after sitting in them for 2 weeks.
all the companies use the same bracket manufacturer, buy corbeau brackets since they price them the best.

No you just have to get silders that are specific to 944's they have the seat belt mounting on them. There more money then the universal ones but you need seats belts.

Apparently, our local PCA region stresses against this generally. They have an interesting safety explanation on stock belts with stock seat design versus aftermarket seats.

I'd be interested in hearing what their arguments are. I don't see how a stock seat belt with my recaro speed seats is any more dangerous than with the stock seats...

I don't know what I will do about the seat belt as soon as I swap the Bracket and slider for the side mount. Sean, wanna buy my mounting bracket and slider with the seat belt provision? barely used at all, for late 944. Its actually quite a nice bracket and slider. $50 bucks picked up.
I can either drill the tunnel and install the belt receiver into there or run harness all the time. I'm not sure that just the floor board is safe enough for the seat belt in an impact. It could be, it could not be. Its ok to use that for a harness, since you have 4 or 5 differenet points to disperse the force through, but with this, its only 3... and only one on that side.

yea true, but you have the shoulder harness on the roll bar which distributes some force away that would otherwise be on that side. Same with the sub belt.

I run a 1 piece race seat with stock belts and a 4 point harness, not all racing sanction may endorse this but it works fine for street, autoX and DE's. The stock belts are used on the street, the harness of course is used during racing. I use the same mount points for both the harness and the seatbelt by replacing the bolt that hold the seatbelts in with eyebolts. This will only work with early cars though. I guess you can convert your car to an early belt set up by just drilling a hole in the tunnel and having a plate welded in. Take measurements from an early car as to where to drill.
On a side note, I'm kind of leary on how well those el cheapo seats will hold up in an accident. Is there a standard they have to meet?

im getting ready to use a 5 or 6pt harness w/ my stock seats, what was their arguement against that? I may eventually go w/ racing seats but not quite yet. I do know that some dont like using 5-6pt belts w/o a rollbar since stock belts are designed for you to slide down during a rollover if the roof collapses and the harness will hold you up , thus squishing your melon. I do have a rear rollbar though.

The argument is the stock seats don't have headrest holes, so the shoulder belts can slip off your shoulders in a crash. Definately a bad situation and I wouldn't even consider running harnesses with the stock seats.
