Question Installing LSD into a non-LSD car??

What does it take to install a Limited Slip Differential into a car thats not equipped from the factory with it?

Are there any good aftermarket makes, or would I have to find a Porsche unit. What is involved in installing this??

Anything good to know about this upgrade?

I was doing research on this earlier this year. Doable by the shadetree mech, but I did not feel confident enough to tackle the job. I was quoted a price of roughly $1500 (including shipping) to install a factory re-furb LSD by a well known shop. Sadly, I am getting a new kitchen instead....Oh well, there is always next year.

BTW I also priced a Quaife TORSEN and Guard TORSEN diff, and both were almost the price of the factory refub, BEFORE install.

Good Luck,

The easist route would be to swap in an LSD transaxle into the car.

I don't know how current the info is, but there's a write-up at the following site, just after suspension.

Good Luck,
Can you share the name of the shop that has factory rebuilt LSD units for $1500. And that includes installation?

Well in reading my post over, I think a clarification is needed. The LSD to be installed was a factory LSD, refurb'd by the shop doing the install. I think this is different than a factory refurb's LSD. Sorry for that.

To further clarify, the price was ~$1000 for the LSD and then ~$300 for labor. I figured ~$200 to ship. Shipping and removal from the car is up to me to accomplish.

I'd say swap it yourself, I did it and it was my first transaxle swap. It was not difficult, just time consumming (whole day job for me). I would suggest using a motorcycle/atv lift. You can pick these up at local auto parts str for $70. They work great for the one man job.

If your talking to me, Im keeping the car for now. I don't have the LSD, mines a S trans. Im thinking the r/r is the same for most all the diff transaxles though. Im sure a little diff from early to late though.

My Porsche Mech and I swaped out a regular Diff in my 1987 for a LSD Tranny and it took about 2 hours with all the right tools, Jacks, and, car lifts.

Anyone have experience with the Quaife units? I figure it would be easier to buy one of those than search for a stock unit.

No, but is sounds cool!

I think that there are three types of Stock Manuel transmissions

M219 Standard Diff
M220 Limited Slip Diff
M221 Locking Diff

What the difference between a locking diff and Limited slip is I do not know?

I had a Quaife put in my gearbox by IMA Motorsport. If you have a cooler and want to run it with the LSD you'll have to buy a new ring gear from Porsche to turn the pump ($250). Quaife was like $1350-1450 alone. Installed total was close to $3k IIRC. I'm very happy with it.

That said, I have a nice spare Turbo S trans that I might sell for the right price Taller gearing than S2 trans, but with a clutch type LSD vs. torque biasing i.e Quaife

I've had two types of differentials in my S2, a Guard Transmission torque biasing unit and a Guard Transmission true limited slip LSD. Both of these are great units and far superior to both the stock LSD, which tends to break, and also the Quaife IMO. The units are beautiful. The true LSD is recommended for track work but I use it on the street and love it. The case is very strong. You can reach Paul Guard at gears@gte.net or http://guardtransmission.com/lsd_info.htm.

The torque biasing (Torsen type) are usually better for street/autox, but I have to say I like the feel of the true LSD better... but I don't do autox.
