Default oil cooler housing compatibilities / interchange info

Where can I find the answer to interchangeable parts between 944 vehicles of different years? I currently have a specific part in mind, an oil cooler housing from a 85.5 944 that I'd like to put on my 83 944, but I would like to know in general where this info is available.

The Haynes manual mentions a bell housing change in the later years, and suggests to use that version instead; I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about that.

Thanks.

should not be any issues except for the oil pressure relieve valve. However I believe the 83 and 85.5 years use the same style valve so that should not be an issue.

all of the housings should be the same from 83 2.5l-89 2.7l. The difference is the opr and where it goes into the block- youll still have to use your old opr though.

cant use the turbo one though or possibly the S and s2 models, dont know about those.
