Default Noisey transmisson.

What would you guys recommend for tranny fluid? Is it easy to insert and remove the fluid fomr the transmission? Or will I need to seek professional help

Just reinstated the S2, that is why I have so many questions

I am guessing I need to renew my subscription again to activate the search engine?

Thanks guys.

Redline manual tranny fluid to GL-4 spec. I have MTL in my transaxle and I'm satisfied.

Pick up a 17mm allen wrench, cut it, and put it in a socket. Take the fill plug out before the drain plug.

Very easy to do. You will need to get under the car with the 17mm allen wrench and a hammer.

Be sure you can open the top plug first, though. It's no good if you drain the tranny and can't refill it again. So clean out the upper filler plug socket with a toothbrush or similar, tap the wrench in, and tap it with the hammer until it starts to turn.

Then repeat the process for the lower drain plug and drain the old lubricant out.

Ideally you should have a long hose and funnel to refill the tranny, however, the lubricant comes in bottles with a long pointed nozzle that works pretty well applied directly to the plug holes. Check the model specs for your car, but it should take nearly 3 quarts of the stuff to fill.

At the correct level, you should be able to touch the fluid by inserting your finger into the fill plug hole and reaching down slightly. Good luck!

That's because you're not supposed to run MTL in a 944 transaxle, it's much thinner than recommended (Same as 10-40W Motor Oil). I personally like Mobil 1 75-90W (Or somewhere around there).

No kidding. I'll start looking for appropriate replacement fluid.

It said 75W-90 on the back though, nothing like 10-40.

Nick, how long did it take?

My car is fine on MTL, and it's been 14000 miles/2 years. But the last thing I need is a transmission on borrowed time.

From their site:
This 70W80 GL-4 Gear Oil (SAE 5W30/10W30 engine oil viscosity)...
I bought it based on the first grade mentioned.

When you do go to change out the fluid make sure you can get the top 17mm plug out first. Don't want to pull the bottom first to only find out the top is seized.

I use sweepco 201 works great and has a good service life. you can pick up a 17mm allen socket at most autoparts stores and if you remove the drivers side rear wheel you can get to the filler plug with a long extension. I use a liberal spraying of PB blaster and let it sit for an hour or so. Then before you try and loosen the plug hit the socket or socket and extension with a hammer a couple of times with the allen head socket seated squarely in the plug. IT will help wake things up a bit and it should come right out if the last person to change to fluid torqued things down properly. Most places that sell gear oil will also sell a pump you can put in the bottle. just put the hose from the pump into the fillter hole and pump away. makes it a lot easier and less mess to fill it back up. If the tranny is warm the whole job takes about 30 min.
