I just have had some bad experiences with traffic incidents that seemed like a closed case. About three years ago I was run off the highway by a giant truck merging without yielding and we nailed a guard rail headon and totaled my wife's accord. He left the scene - may not have even known what happened. The police caught him and I think even threw him in prison (Maybe just for the night - not sure - don't think he had proof of insurance). He was in a company truck and no matter what we did we were not able to go after the company. In the end our insurance ended up paying. It was a pretty bum deal. I just wish I would have done a lot more footwork right when everything was fresh. At the scene everyone is very nice and apologetic but later on that can change. I've heard that in a number of stories.

Its different in California. The registered owner has the main responsibility regardless who is driving the car. If its a company truck, they are deep $hit since people always go after deep pockets.

You were slowing down to "handwipe" your windshield?

"get your car back 100% fixed at no cost to you", you obviously haven't had this happen to you.

the insurance company is going to total it and based on kbb or something similiar, tied to mileage and that's what you'll get - whatever $$ to buy it back.

it doesn't matter how much trick stuff, wheels, new paint/interior or total investment in the ride.
hope you have comp in case the other driver was uninsured.

a year ago i was t-boned in the 87944S, got 5k + the car, i wanted the 16v motor/xmsn and it has a salvage title.
