how do you check if your water pump is faulty?

With the timing belt off, check for excess play in the bearing, also any noise ...IE scraping, grinding. You shouldnt replace it based on it being faulty or not, you should just replace it based on milage. Every other belt change, or figure 60k-80k miles depending how often you change your belts.
