Default Need Opinions: Fiberglass body kits

http://www.gt-racing.com/

I saw this website about 6 months ago (when I had money to burn) and was really intent on purchasing a fiberglass widebody kit for my 1987 924S. YOu have to navigate the site a little to find it, but there is an extensive list of 944/924 fiberglass/carbonfiber parts.

The question is, would it be easier just to buy a 944, or spend an odd 4000 dollars or so and get my car wrapped in 'glass and some new paint?

My car has slight accident damage to the drivers side, so to be finished it needs some new parts anyway.

I've bought headlight stuff for my 944 there. Installation required hours upon hours of fitment work. Don't buy a set of 944 body work to fit to your 924S unless you've dumped obscene amounts of money into every other part of it already. Just buy a late series 944 n/a. You could buy one in good shape for that 4000 you talk about, and not have to deal with "oh the body shop f%&ked this up, and now they won't fix it" or "I forgot to specify this" or "why did I just spend twice what it would cost to sell my 924S and buy a 944?!"

my headlights... sorry for the horrible camera phone quality.

Those are dead sexy!

Yes, quite a bit of money has been dumped into it (about a 5k total investment) THe car is still a literal disaster, but it runs well. I also have a wrecked 85 944 with alot of good parts.

What is an n/a 944?

I was thinking about just spending 4-5k on a decent 944 turbo or for a GREAT non turbo 944. I don't know if these cars are for me- i can do most work but I hate the kind of Garage Queen type work they require, like the timing belt readjustment and other complex work that takes an experienced mechanic to do properly.

That was the idea I'm satisfied.

Well in that case maybe you do want to consider the body work option. I think it just comes down to your budget - how much do you want to spend on fitment and quality paint, etc. etc.

What is an n/a 944?
n/a = normally or naturally aspirated = non-turbo. same difference.

I was thinking about just spending 4-5k on a decent 944 turbo or for a GREAT non turbo 944. I vote for buying a killer 944. By killer, I mean there are no out-of-spec issues from negligence, it still looks great inside and out, and you can read up on the last few years of service records at a minimum. After all the money I've dumped in my car, I would stick the price at or close to 5k, and simply wait for the right buyer. That's what you've got to do if you want top dollar for your vehicle.

I also reccomend the 944 non-turbo because of your lack of interest in spending every weekend fixing something. No turbo = less stuff to break. Hope that helps!

I've been happy with my body panels, but my car is by no means "show".

i have a full fiberglass body kit compiled by 2 companies, and the fit/finish was near perfect on everything except the rear valance. 924 fts header panel - The front end is from www.fiberwerks.com and my sideskirts (flush molded) and rear euro valance (I SHOULD of just went with the stock turbo valance) are from IFC which went out of buisness a few years back. there is a lister here who's car looks ALMOST exactly like mine (1BAD944) buy it was repainted artic silver (from zermatt).

I can say this, after 6-7 years of a fiberglass body kit, there are now imprefections from "body flex" age, time, and use. MINOR MINOR seems can be seen. The car looks great, but if your a perfectionist then you may want to stay away. Fiberglass will crack VERY easy if involved in any accident, or if too much stress is put on it. I will post pix later its 5:15 am here.

I have the side skirts from IRC that I modified with NACA ducts, they required more work than the rear euro bumper I purchaed from "gtracing". the hood, header panel and rear valance are OEM parts but are available aftermarket.

heres jeff's car, still at the garage waiting for warmer climates for more work. All of these parts are from gtracing. I like the parts, but if you arent a fabricator or a body man, not sure i would want to mess with fitting all that stuff. Buy a 944, youll be much happier in the long run.

I hate to ask, but what does one do about the wheels being sunken in after fitting the wide body kit? Wouldn't the whole suspension and driveline need modifying in order to bring the wheels out to where they look proper, or do you just fit some wheels with lots of negative offset?

I think most 944 use 7" front 8"-9" rear wide wheels - with the wide body kit think - 10" front /12" rear - heavy, but sexy. Helps to have a lot of torque as well. We are probably talking "0" wheel spin

and just to get you salivating here are some other fiberglass websites. The first one is nice and different

http://www.estrictlyforeign.com/asp/...gory=1&ID=1092

http://www.allporscheracing.com/WBody.html

http://www.jacquemond.com/designbyjacquemond.htm

http://www.autoatlanta.com/model/944...g/944-108.html

But I have been told that fiberglass does not hold up well with street use ???
