You just haven't hit a big enough pothole to blow thru the thin modified strut wall.

Also the late spindles are -2mm wide than the early struts and 2mm shims should be used. The way the strut interface is designed, it clamps to the spindle with very little play/tolerance.

Ah well, looks like I'll need blown turbo struts. Does anyone have a pair I could buy?

No, just seen pics of the aftermath of such a mod. I modded my Early struts to accept Late spindles...the correct (read safe) way.... Think about it, your entire car is riding on 3/16" of thin plate steel if you elongate the holes without reinforcing them....
