Default Picture of DME location for 1984 944

So, I was reinstalling my motor and preparing for my first race this next weekend, and all was going relatively well. I get ready to start the car, and notice the DME harness on the driver's side floor. That's odd, because neither me nor the guys who were helping me remember removing the DME. So, I crawl under the dash to reinstall, and we cannot find the DME. So, either someone took it, or, more likely, forgot that they removed it, or we just are not seeing it. Does anyone have a picture or drawing that shows exactly where the DME is on a 1984 944?

Thanks,

TD

Early cars = driver's side.

Stick your head down in the driver's side footwell and look up right at the base of the steering column under the dash. Metal box. That's it.

FWIW, why they ever moved the DME from that location to the one over on the pass. side is completely beyond me. . . More opportunity for moisture infiltration, not to mention longer (heavier) harnesses. . .

Yes, so it should be mounted directly to the firewall under the needle bearing where the steering column goes through the firewall?

On mine it's more towards the middle - I think it attaches to the steering column or underside of the dash somehow rather than the firewall. There's too much other stuff towards the firewall for them to attach it there - fuse panels, etc. If you can't locate it I'll get a pic up this evening.

Thanks George.

No wheels yet, but they may arrive today. I am so utterly frustrated right now I could scream. My DME is missing. yup. My car is all back together, but no DME. I had a line on one I could borrow, but, apparently, it is for a late model car so it will not work. ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH If it is not one thing it is another. I now understand the "project car for sale" posts.

Well, my time-warp generator is out getting warranty work done (damned thing never worked right). I might be able to help in the near future however if you need it.

Thanks George. I bought one that is supposed to arrive tomorrow, and someone loaned my another for use this weekend, so I should be ok for the weekend. Thanks for offering, I really appreciate it.

Although nothing can be verified with 100% certainty, I think the shop I took the car to after spinning the rod bearing removed it to test another customer's car, and simply forgot to put it back in. They gave me one that fit and worked, which is amazing because it is an 86 DME in an 84 car. Apparently, someone swapped out harnesses despite leaving the early motor in the car.

My car runs now, and it didn't leak anywhere . . . .

I hear that all you need to do to swap to a later DME is swap to that years AFM anyways and it'll work.

I think there may be a little more to it than that. At a minimum, you need AFM, a different O2 sensor and a different DME plug/harness. The sad thing is that I bought two early model DMEs before the shop told me they had mine, and that it was a late model DME
