sbyrne, i just mean they are well on their way out. I have not replaced them at all. My bushings are a year old. BAll joijtns are in good shape and tie rods are fine. I was just wondering if I should stick with the Koni adjustables or try something else.

I hear KYBs are very decent for daily use (especially for the price), but that they're a little stiffer than OEM shocks.

When I bought my car it came with brand new KYB's and I've been abusing them since. Eventually I'll get some koni's but for now the KYB's work fine for the road and autoX. Jeeze, for the price they're great.

I just threw a set of KYB's on the back of my 968 and like them-stiffer than boge, but not as stiff as M030 (what I had on there that started leaking). I'm going to drive them for a while and then go Koni, but for now they're fine.

Bilstein HDs would be my choice. I believe they offer more compression damping than Koni Yellows and rebound is said to be about half way as stiff as Koni Yellows set at full stiff. Why I see them be the least hassle setup for a performance upgrade shock is due to the fact that they are NOT adjustable, thereby relieving you of the urge to constantly fiddle with valve settings.

Do note they are intended for stock height springs, or rather are not intended for radically lowered cars and they don't fit Ground Control/Paragon ARHKs anyway, so that eliminates that temptation.

Hey Manning, would the 220lb springs that lower the car slightly be a bad choice w/ the Bilstein HDs?

Hope not

I doubt it. I think what Bilstein is concerned about is folks putting their cars in the grass, that is to say, slamming them. I don't think the 220s drop the car much if at all.

Silverbean, if you have Konis on the car now, they can be rebuilt / revalved rather than replaced. Look in the classifieds in "Sports Car" for rebuilders.

Bilsteins do too. You can get them revalved just north of San Diego.

Lifetime warrantly to the original purchaser, with receipt, generally handled through the original retailer. Maybe some retailers are a bit more flexible on this than others. Revalving can be handled no matter what for a fee as long as the shocks/inserts are still in rebuilable condition. So units cannot be rebuilt.

lots of very helpful input and i thank you all.

i did check the Bilstein website and they do have a lifetime warranty against defects and it looks like that would included if and when they don't work properly anymore, as long as they have not been abused or improperly installed.

as for price, i see sets of 4 Bilsteins on Ebay for around $400 and Konis for $600 so it looks like about a difference of $50 PER wheel. for me that is a significant amount for right now.

i may also consider some used Bilsteins if they appear to have life left in them. cheaper yet and who knows, tomorrow i may get done-in by a bus or a zeppelin or who knows what.

i will post what i end up doing and what i think of the results.

Wink Struts/Springs

Just replaced a set of KYB strut inserts. With the stock springs it was just a lousy handling package. Went with new Welt 200lb springs (didn't want to mess with ride height) and Bilstein inserts. Much tighter, stiffer but not overly so. I have a acquaintance running 800lb springs in spec 944Cup. Will be interested to see how much more understeer may develop with tighter front and basically a stock rear susp setup...........

On my previous non p-car I had Bilstein hd's I love 'em... I'm just trying to figure out now how to get them on my 87 turbo, I can buy the rears but not front? I have koni adjustibles on my bmw, they are nice too but the bmw is set to soft cause it's a Daily driver. the bilsteins are harsher but the scirocco handeled like a go-cart with em...

I'll mention as wella fellow LIster is going to give me his factory 175 lb springs, which are in great shape. He just upgraded his suspension. He is also giving me his sways. He has an 88 turbo, and mine is an 85.5 n/a. Will all of that just bolt up? And would the yellows go well with the 175's, or are the Bilstein's better with the 175's?
