I claim shenanigans.

Old people and gangseters buy Lincons. Porsche owners are PICKEY!!! We denamd a lot. Now explain how Hundai gets great Inital Quality scores. (hint, look at who buys them and what they expect)

Yeah porsche got 2nd for dependability. and azmi951 thats what i was thinking, if anything whatsoever were wrong with the car they'd have it back there in a flash.

The JD Power 3-year dependability study (the one in the link) is more impartial and a lot more meaningful than that 90 day initial quality study that seems to often get more press coverage.

The 90 day study is strongly skewed by "percieved" defects that can also include design ( I think the Mercedes M-Class got hammered because the cup holders were not very good ergonomically...) As was said above, a very picky owner of a high-$ car may note the most minute problems that would never come close to registering on the radar of the typical new Hyundai owner (not meaning to pick on Hyundai, they have come a long way).

here's the funny part...a squeak in the interior to a porsche / honda / toyota owner is the same weight as the cruise control device on an explorer that will burn down your house!

JD Power doesn't rank the defect just counts the total numbers of defects - it's only a statistic to claim they are catching up - Consumer Reports does a much higher and more detailed review of a cars actual quality

Dunno if I am out in left field here or not, but 5th Gear <yes, I have a lot of them on my tivo :-D> said Porsche was their pick for best sports car one year and one of the factors in their choice was reliability...

The 3 year study would be interesting since a good chunk of the population gets rid of their cars after 2-3 years..........

You havent been in a Hyundai recently. The Sonata I had as a rental had 17" wheels, nice leather seats, auto climate control, compass in the mirror, clean and tight body gaps, peppy V6. It was damn sure not the Hyundai of 10 years ago. I usually dog the hell out of rentals but this Hyundai was incredibly nice, FAR nicer than I expected and about 100X nicer than the Impala I had the week before!

In product development we have an agreed upon definition for quality:

Quality is what the customer expects.

I'm beginning to think "H" stands for Hyundai.

...we are just various product development pros I've dealt with over the years (engineers, marketing, manufacturing, quality control guys), many different companies - all like to use that line. We like the double entendre, I guess. It's a tough word to define if you think about it.

Actual I was in a Hyundai yesterday. On a quick gloss over it is a good car. However, drive it and you know where they spent their money.

A side note, I do a bit of work with IQS scores as well as VDS.
There is a major flaw with those reports, they rely on customer deffinitions like what GTROTH said.

Initial quality can be a fickle thing. People, like me, who expect a Hyundai to be a complete POS (like they were 10 years ago) come away stunned. There were a number of us with them for rentals and we all commented on how nice they seeemed. That said, it could have broken down the day after I rented it and I would be none the wiser.

Seems hard to believe that Porsche did so well. There are a lot of newer P-car owners that seem to have had the rear main seal leak which is a pretty big problem apparently.
