front speaker replacement ?
I am replacing my rotted out OEM speakers with Alpine SPS-460A speakers that have polypropylene cones. Should I leave the OEM rubber covers on the backside in or would it sound better leaving them out?

4x6 replacements are nothing but a big damned dissapointment to me. Anyone have recommendations on how to get some decent sound from a door speaker replacement?

[QUOTE=BeerBurner]In my car, I solved this problem by making a 1/4-inch spacer out of balsa wood (it was only meant to be temporary, but it's still holding up, six years later!) that followed the outline of the speaker cover. I put that spacer in between the speaker and the door panel. It solved my problem and you can't see it. [QUOTE]

Without going with a completely custom door panel and bigger door speakers ie 6.5", you aren't really going to get much of an improvement. Being that you are starting inside a car means you'll be fighting an uphill battle for sound quality, even more so if you want to keep weight down. Add to this the fact that none of the better car audio manufacturers (dynaudio, cdt, focal, etc) make a 4x6" size makes it even more difficult.
I think the best solution if you want to stick with the stock grills is to go with a half decent 4x6 speaker like the alpine mentioned above, a good headunit like an alpine, mcintosh, nakamichi, etc, a good amp for the speakers (very important for SQ) from a good company like JL, zapco, mcintosh, memphis, and then a custom sub enclosure in the rear seat area and putting in something from Image Dynamics, Diamond audio, adire audio, or JL along with another good amp for the sub(s)....if going that route you could easily leave the rear speakers out, which makes the install easier since you wouldn't have to deal with removing and replacing those speakers...

my 83 has either 4" or 6" round in the stock panel. when i took the panel off to fix the infamous broken power window regulator, the door was also cut for round and not oval speakers.
does anyone else have this, i usually see 6x9's in the doors.

I have the stock 4" x 6" speakers with stock plastic grilles on my '85. My mom has custom speaker enclosures installed into the speaker openings, which support 5.25" Infitiny speakers. She also has 6x9 rear Infinitys in the trunk (installed in the flat cubby covers). Pretty decent tunes, but nothing beats my dad's 928 with the factory 8 speaker system, which has all new pioneer speakers...

Well, the Alpine 4 x 6's fit perfect without adding a spacer. They are about 1/8" deeper than the Blaupunkt's but still missed hitting the window track.
To install a larger speaker, you would have to do some metal cutting to get anything but a 4 x 6 speaker in.
Looking in the speaker hole I noticed a house key and some other junk in the door. I removed the door panel to find the bottom two inches of the door panel soaked and beginning to deteriorate the board material. I haven't washed the car for two months since I garaged it for winter (Minnesota Salt Roads). I did not drive it since washing so maybe with no air passing through the door, it can't dry out?
Also, I noticed what I believe is another set of speaker wires coming out of the wiring harness. Is this the wiring for the 8 speaker option?
