Nope, never was. In the early 60's Pontiac cut their 389 V8 in half. Ever wonder where Porsche got the idea?

Just to follow up a little more on my Pontiac answer. The Pontiac 4cyl was 1/2 of the 389 V8, they put it in the Tempest. There was a flexible driveshaft, and the transmission was in the rear. Sound somewhat familiar?

BTW, the engine didn't have balance shafts and was set in very soft engine mounts. It still vibrated and was only produced 3 years, 1961-1963. In 1964 Pontiac decided to put the whole V8 in the Tempest and called it the ...... GTO, Starting the whole muscle car era.

Question OT: Why not leadership?

So with all these great ideas stemming from Detroit, why is it that they can't maintain the technical leadership in the industry?

Why is it that we are saddled with the level and quality of cars as they are rather than something better?

You'd thilnk that the two would go together, wouldn't you?
