Default Great lights but just one problem

I rewired my headlights finally giving them a direct link to the battery. The results are an incredibly whiter light. I didn't want to cut any existing wiring so I created a new harness which uses all existing connections as well as an additional line to the battery. Anyway in my clumsiness I somehow broke the inside hinge on the drivers side headlight. The triangular piece with the perpendicular shaft. Anybody have the part laying around from a parts car or fixed headlight conversion? In the meantime I'll be going by Zims tomorrow to see if a new one is available. Thanks.

this wont answer ur question, but i had a question on ur new setup. How did u create a direct link to the battery? what gauge wires did you use? and how easy or hard was the install?

When I installed a new alternator last year I put in an additional 10 guage wire from the main battery connection and capped it off near the drivers headlight. This past week I setup two 30 amp relays (and associated fuses) which use the new power wire for the load connection and the existing dim/bright wires for the relay signals. The setup is pretty easy once you gather all the parts together. Since I didn't cut anything, I can always go back to the original circuit by just yanking out the new harness. You could just as easily set it up on the passenger side and connect directly to the battery there.

DME do you have a wiring diagram by any chance? Any and all information for us electrically challenged types would be appreciated by many I'm sure.

Thanks,

Greg

I was actually thinking about doing the same thing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but basically what you did was change the wiring that is powering your lights. Instead of all the power for the lights running through the headlight switch, you now have it coming straight off the battery??

What is the part number of the piece that you need? I'm sure i have it somewhere.

That is a better diagram then I could ever do. The final project isn't near as complicated as it might seem. My first attempt is more of a 'proof in concept' and now I'll go back and try to clean it up some...make it pretty. What I wanted to do was convert one headlight to see the difference right next to each other. Now that I'm convinced, I will finish the job and enjoy the new found light...after I fix the headlight hinge. I cannot even find the headlight raising assembly (except the motor) in the parts catalog!

Hi DME, any chance you could post a picture of the connection at the battery?

Thanks again for sharing

My connection actually comes off of the alternator like it appears the ice shark kit does. If you can see the back of the alternator (not an easy job) there is a MAJOR cable going to the battery. That is the connection I used. I'd show a picture of the small harness I created, but I have found that sea water and digital cameras do not mix well.

Ah, so you actually tapped into the connection at the alternator? Forgive my ignorance, it's one thing to splice into and put connectors on 18 gauge wire, quite another at 10 guage!

No splice. Ring connector off the pole on the alternator. 10 AWG is a bit more difficult to work with. Certainly bigger connectors. I only used 10 for the main power supply and then 12 for the individual light power wires.

Also, thanks for the responses on the pivot pin hinge. This is a great list. I'm picking up a used one from Zim's today.

Doing this lets you use standard (90w?) lamps?

I just put in SilverStars a few weeks ago, but more light is always good
