Talking Recommended Brake Pads for Track and Street Duty

Hey guys, I'd like to hear some thoughts and recommendations out there about brake pads and your experiences. The car is still on jackstands and the engine assembly will happen next week along with the removal of the motor in my car.

In the meantime, I'd like to get all my questions answered for brakes. Some of you know that I have a set of '86 951 spindles and brakes that will be going on the NA. I'd like to get a good set of brake pads to compliment the improvement in braking ability.

I have checked into Hawk HP Plus pads and am shocked at the price of $129 for the front and $129 also for the rear. I was wondering if there is something comparable for a lower price than can still be used for daily driving as well as autocross. Oh and a low quantity of dust is also something I'm looking for too Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

I've heard that pagid pads are good ones for that type of use. Thinking of upgrading to these myself.

you can probably get by with metal masters (about $35 per axle set) for autocross. Don't expect them to be a good as other pads however.

Used Metalmasters. I am not disappointed by their performance, nor am I enthusiastic about them. But they are decent. I just wanted to try something else new for a change

I have the Hawk HPS on my car right now, which i suppose are a class below the HP Plus. They are pretty good as far as i can tell for regular street and spirited driving, i have put about 1500 miles on them so far. I have yet to be able to autocross with them yet. They also are not very dusty, the other pads (i believe they were Mintex or atleast of OEM variety would make my wheels gunmetal in 2-days of daily driving, id say about 100 miles total.

I use the Metalmasters as well, albeit I do no autocrossing or anything of the sort but I find them very adequate for my 500 miles a year driving (even the spirited miles :-)

Went from metal master to Performance Friction Brakes in the front. Got the extra stopping power I was needing without tearing up the rotors. Left the metalmaster in the rear.

No such thing as a track pad that's good for the street and vice versa. Any pad that'll hold up to track use will be noisy, dusty and hard on your rotors on the street and any decent street pad will melt at the track.

There are some decent auto-x pads out there, like the Hawk HP+ (dusty and noisy) the Cobalt Friction GT Sports (a bit noisy) and the Porterfield R4S.

I use MetalMasters on the street ... not overly impressed, but they do work for street use. The MetalMasters are nothing like the Carbotech Panther+ pads that I use for track days. I thought my car was going to stand on its nose once those things were at operating temp.

Don't get the Pagid S Pads. I've put about a 1000 miles on mine and they squeak like crazy. I'll be changing them out to something ceramic soon.

Sincerely, Lee
