Default Yup, my car is cursed.

Bad crankshaft, scored cylinders, USPS almost destroyed a $2k package of parts, a bad valve seat in the cylinder head that required plenty of machine work, a clutch that refuses to feel right... And now....

Bad torque tube bearings Nice grinding sound when I spin the driveshaft by hand. Never happened when the engine was out, I guess I couldnt spin it fast enough with the transaxle hooked up.

<Sigh>

Ugh, I feel your frustration. My last 3 cars have been cursed. Problem after problem and I sold each of them under $200...with 5x that in new parts. My 944 has been doing the same thing, but at this point almost everything is new

Keep on going man, I saw your pics and you've got a nice looking motor!

I know exactly how you feel.
I am in the same situation.
I spent $6k-ish on my motor rebuild, then on the first trip out I felt a bit of vibration/rumbling. Didn't think too much of it, until the first trip in the rain, when it was so loud you had to yell inside the car to talk. The TT bearings in mine are super-loud when it's cold/wet outside, but half-way quiet when it's warm. Kind of a big kick in the *** to finish such a big project then find out you need to pull the TT, which would have been 5x easier with the motor and exhaust off...
At least you found yours while the motor was still out
Always look on the bright side of life..... wait, too much monty python!

Actually my motor is in I dropped the transaxle to replace its mount and to pull the bellhousing to see if anythings wrong since my clutch doesnt feel like I think it should. I slid the tube back, and was taking a break from trying to rotate it to get it further back when I gave the shaft a spin. Heard the noise, then decided to call it quits. No point in trying to rotate it to get the bell housing off when I have to drop the rear suspension to get it out

That sucks that yours cropped up afterwards. Those bearings were #1 on my worry list, so at least they came up now. I heard a bearing going bad quite litterally the afternoon that I took my car off the road and assumed it was the throwout bearing. Guess not

ST, yes those are nice injectors for a great price

Yeah, I didn't check mine since it was perfectly quiet on the return trip from NYC. It behaved so nicely, I figured it had been replaced or rebuilt. I guess not
Are NA and turbo torque tubes the same? I have a spare N/A one that I could rebuild then swap....

Bearing source for the 928 guys, think it is the same bearing as the 6006 the 944 uses:
http://www.jageng.com/atmyservice.htm#928bearing

I keep hearing Markus Blaszak rebuilds them, might give him a ring.

theedge please keep me informed of cost and availability of the bearings if you happen to find a set.
Like I said, I have a spare N/A tube, maybe 2 if you are interested in rebuilding one then swapping it in (we're both canadian, and greyhound doesn't cost much to ship).
I plan to sand-blast the one I have, then either use epoxy-based paint (like por-15) or powdercoat it. As the spare I have is pretty rusty, and the other one's condition is unknown (still in my 86).

The link posted above has everything, for a price. Four bearings are $140USD, four of the delrin bearing sleeves are $200USD. Total after shipping to Blaine, WA is $350-360USD. Pretty stiff but if its needed its needed. Im going to remove the tube this weekend and tear it down to see if I need the delrin sleeves.

Interesting. That is pretty steep. I recall hearing that you could just do the bearings, and it was ~$80. That was on Clark's garage a long time ago.
What is the deal with the sleeves?.... I must have the wrong idea of how this all fits together.

The sleeves fit between the bearings and shaft I believe. Yes, with a 944, there is always more to expect.
:-)
I guess they need to be replaced if damaged during bearing removal.
