Ok, admittedly some will like this and others will find it 'ricey', to each his own I say...

After recently rebuilding the head, converting to a K27/6 turbo, replacing the belts, replacing the PS rack,adding a MAF and generally doing a massive cleaning/painting job in the engine bay of my '87 951, I was left with a 20 year old ugly yellow coolant tank that stuck out like a sore thumb.

not bad, but I think it wouldve looked better if teh lines were a little straighter.. I don't know how hard it was though, so i won't judge!

Thanks guys. The lines actually are straight, what you're seeing is the contour of the face of the coolant tank, which dips down around the filler neck.

This really started off as kind of a joke, I was just going to paint it for fun and keep my eyes open for a good used tank on Ebay but then 35thSLP offered his services and I'm rather surprised how well it turned out.

Having said that, the K27/6, Vitesse software and MAF are much, much more amusing!

Looks good, I'm leaning towards a base coat.

 

Could be the geometry of the tank. I know my old one has some undulations in the upper surface (probably due to 20-ish years of heat deformation and pressurization cycles). It's not bad, but enough to distort straight lines from looking perfectly straight.

 

That is one awesome engine compartment. I hope after I pick up the 951 I'm looking at, I can get it to look like that.

Greg, the bay looks good and I bet you notice just a small improvement in performance, heheheh.

You guys are being awfully nice to me, I figured I'd get at least a few naysayers. Honestly, I'm not even sure about it myself but it does make me giggle, which I suppose is worth something.

As for performance, I'm am pretty impressed with the K27/6 in combination with the Vitesse MAF. I intend to get it to a dyno once I've sorted out a couple of niggling issues but my seat of the pants impression is that it's a solid improvement over my K26/6 AFM Guru chip setup. The turbo spools up within a hundred or so RPM of where it did before and it holds 18lbs all the way to redline. One of my issues is the inconsistent peak boost that the Reliaboost is giving me, 15lbs in 2nd gear, 16 in 3rd and 18 in 4th & 5th. Looks like an EBC is in my fugure...

The MAF is a quality piece and John's service was great. The biggest difference I notice with the MAF is the off boost throttle response and torque, well that and the sexy whooshing noises. With the stock AFM it was pretty soft when off boost (I'm at 5,000 ft elevation, which makes it worse), to the point that I had to plan a bit before pulling in front of traffic. Now it feels like a 'normal' car when off boost and a supercar when on boost

Oh, and I'm sure that the spirt of Ferry Porsche is contributing to the performance gain in honor of my coolant tank ode to the family crest, LOL!
