I've read recently around here about people running some ATF fluid (I think?) in their oil to clean stuff out... Is there any concensus on whether that would be better than running Marvel Mystery Oil before and after (in a lesser proportion) an oil change?

tip the rear end up about 8-10inches. For some reason, I was always able to quell the clacking after a few minutes.

I've never seen a lifter actually fail. In all of the ones I've seen they just get plugged up.
Now, if you were fiddling around with it, that could cause problems, and if you think this is the reason, I'd replace it just to be on the safe side.

Trevor,

ATF, like Risolone and Marvel Mystery oil, are low viscosity lubricants that are also high in detergents. Since ATF is not formulated to run in engines, it should only be used for short periods.
