Default Polishing Fuchs??

Hey there everyone, I have Fuchs on my car and wonder what everyone does to polish them up to look like mirrors?? I have try that polish from mothers by hand and it does remover dirty and what not but won't get that nice mirror like glass look. Since my car is off the road for the season, I would like to polish them up real nice since I can do like an hour or two a day without getting them dirty or anything. I have do a search on this and there is some info but no real "This is what I did and what I used to get the nice polish look on them"

Mike,I did mine.It took a)3m paint stripping pad,to remove the clear coat, b)various grits of sand paper, starting with 220 to remove blems and working up to 2000. c) polishing compound and wheel, use in electric drill. This took quite a while to get the results that I wanted. Now they look great as long as I use alum.polish every once in a while. If you would like to see them, drop me a pm and I'll tell you how to get here....FRED

Hey Fred, we still need to hook up sometime when the weather get nice since we never did this summer. I know what polished fuchs look like, AWESOME!! My clear coat is off, I think, so I would start with a 500 or more because mine are pretty smooth already. Just wondering, about how long it took per wheel? I know it will depend on SO much, just looking a guess though. Also, when you used the sand paper, did you do that by hand then?

Mike,Yes we need to hook up this spring or summer.I've been following the progress on you car and would like to see it.Now back on topic. It took about 5hrs per wheel.I did everthing by hand except the polishing compound, also I did not do the "spokes",only the outer rim.Make sur you work "with the grain" in this case the rotation of the wheel,uo and down the spokes.Good luck.Any more help needed just ask....FRED

Some pic's of my old shiny Fuchs....

Aircraft quality stripper, Easy-Off to remove the anodizing, progressively finer abrasives and final polish. Count on several hours each wheel DIY.

Have fun!

Pretty sweet looking. Kinda reminds me of the old Craigger SS's back in the day. Of course, these are probably a lot better.

Right you are! I'm definitely into the old school look. Here's some pic's of Cragar SS's on another "performance car" I recently bought. They're at least twice as heavy as the Fuchs and no where near the quality but I like the look on both cars...

You know what?

The Fuches don't look at all like the Craiggers, now that I can see them nex tto each other. The Craigger spokes are much more rounded.

Those wheels look absolutely fantastic. If only I could get my extra set of cookie cutter rims to look that good.

What are the Fuchs made of and what other Porsche wheels can you polish yourself to make look like this?

WOW, that clear coat is taking forever!!! It took me about 1.5 hours to get a section of one tire about 5" long!!! Well, I spent about 30 mins using a high grit paper to see what it would look like. I am glad I started this project now and not like a week from pulling the car out for the summer!!

Mike, After I finished mine I had no finger prints left. All the hand work with the sandpaper took care of them.Maybe I should have started a new career. Anyway don't start with the next finer grit untill all of the previous grit scratches are removed. If you move up to finer grits too fast you will end up with some polished scratches from the rougher paper..Take your time and anjoy the finished product. Also you might try the 3m paint stripping wheels, they worked very well for me.You will notice a color change when the clearcoat comes off.. Enjoy, FRED
