Mike, the clear coat should not be hard to remove (read post #7 above). I suspect you're trying to sand off the anodizing...NOT fun. You need to use chemicals to do the work, i.e., stripper for the clear coat, then a caustic chemical such as EASY OFF oven cleaner and steel wool repeatedly to remove the anodizing. Only then would I begin sanding. Also, you should consider using power tools on the larger surfaces and save your hands/fingers for the smalller areas/crevices, etc.

THANKS!! I didn't really read your post before, you wheels were just to "bling bling" to see the post!! I got about a 1/4 of a wheel done and MAN it looks great already. I know when the top coat comes off, the sand paper slides much harder on the clean spot then the other spot. Anyone know of how much it cost to get the center part sanded and re-painted? Mine are ok but just wondering how much it would cost or even for me to do. I don't want all polished fuchs on my car, I love the black centers. So Carl, you spray the "Easy Off" on the lip, how long do you let it sit then? Do you have to do more then one coat? I have masking tape on the tires all the way around so I don't touch the tires (all my idea!! I am proud) and since the center part goes in some you really don't hit it. Where is a good place to get the Easy Off then, like Home Depo?

I assumed you were polishing the entire wheel... The rim won't be that difficult. As for the EasyOff, it's stocked at your local grocery store. Spray it on, let it sit and bubble up the anodizing but don't let it dry, then scrub/clean it off with abrasive media, e.g., steel wool. Rinse and repeat. Two or three applications should get all the anodizing off. Be sure to carefully protect the all areas you don't want stripped (including your hands).

Well, after 10 hours on one wheel and no finger prints left, I ALMOST have one wheel done!! It still does have some small scratches you can see from like 6" to a foot, but after that (more then a foot) it looks AWESOME!! Can't wait to get them all done and on the car to see what it looks like!!

Can I do this on my turbo twists? On my phone dials? Or does it only work on wheels made from specific materials?

I have seen it done with phone dials with pretty stunning results. I would imagine that it will work on almost any wheel.
I am going to do this to my winter wheels next spring. Every time I read a wheel polishing thread I think of it.

Ok, I got one MOST of the way done, would still like to polish it up more some but I am VERY happy with it. Time for the time spent on just ONE wheel, To remove clear coat: 6 Hours Going from 200 grit all the way up to a 2,000 grit wet sanding: 8 hours Polishing the wheels up with polish: 4 hours Total hours then is 20 hours for just one wheel, no finger prints and a shine you can look up a girl's dress in I am going to take a couple days off and start the next wheel, only 3 left to go!

Mike, good work!! That wheel looks great. Here's hoping the others don't take you as long.

Thanks, Zen dude, your uncle and I are probably the same age. I used to street race a 65 Satellite back in the day, a 383/4spd. Lucky to have survived! But this one is so much stronger, a built 440 and it's just great fun in a straight line...
