Take a look at the pics below.....as you can see one of the starters says 951 Turbo on it so half the question is answered......so what type of starter is the other one?

Also take a look at the last pic. Why would someone file down the nose of the starter like that?

I know the answer to my first question and have a possible answer to the second. I want to see what Rennlisters say before divulging my answers. Thanks for your guesses and comments.

Looks similar to the starter on our 1995 968 with Tiptronic. 968s with manual ransmissions have a different starter without the "nose".

well I gues rennlisters dont know much about starters afterall.

OK then the starter on the left came off my 951 and the starter on the right also came off a 951. So now who wants to tell me all 944/951 starters are the same?

The smaller one was from my car....86 951....the other was from an 87 951.

Seriously though, the local starter/alternator rebuilder said Porsche and BMW starters are the best and last forever. And they should on the 951, it is a low compression 2.5L 4 cyc, it doesnt take much to turn them over. Now my old mans 454 11:1 big block nearly twisted the internals out of a stock chevy starter.

funny...several people have talked about having to go through 4 or 5 starters......these things are terrible.

I have a VW starter that ostensibly looks the identical to our 944 starter...

...except that the gear teeth are cut the opposite way, because
...it turns backwards (to what's needed in a 944)

Never saw a number stamped in that particular place on the silver portion of the starter that holds the bendix assembly.

well both these starters are technically 951 starters since they both came out of 951s.....but I suppose I cant be 100% sure becuase the PO on both or one of the cars could have put in a different starter that actually does work on the 951.

I was actually hoping someone would be able to say why there would be scratches (filed down) on the nose of the starter.

Andial - there are scratches on the nose because this is the first thing that occurs to you to do when you hear the noise that the starter makes when you use the wrong bellhousing (grinding, tetth BARELY meshing noise)
You think that the starter hasn't sufficient reach into the housing, so you file it.
Then you find out, it still does it.

Once again - experience talking.

I really wish you lived closer so you could bring that car and that dumbass psuedo-mechanic to my house so I could fix your car for free in 10 minutes and bitch-slap that knucklehead for wasting your money.

I just looked at my receipts, in 1998 a mechanic wrote "Starter showing signs of age"

7 years later, still working fine.
