Not for the rack boot itself, but you'll probably want to make sure no grease/oil/dirt gets inside of the boot. Looks rather messy in that area.

Thanks,

There is about an inch of power steering fluid and dirt on that side of the rack.

Can I just spray pb blaster on the part of the rod that should be under the boot to remove all the crap?

Hey Jim,
Just clean it out good and put on a new boot. You should be fine. Just make sure to get any sand/grit out of there first.

Are you guys taking the NA up to Rennstock?

Thanks,

Yes, we'll be in the 84.

I don't think the rack is leaking. I know the pump and hoses were.
Just one more reason for the conversion. No more 944 power steering mess.

While you're at it, re-grease the inner tie rod end. ATF is not really sufficient for this task. Most racks come with wheel bearing grease packed in there. ATF will wash the grease out of the joint, and can cause premature inner tie rod end failure, just like dirt and sand can.

I am working on re-sealing my entire power steering system too. What a task. You're lucky your rack doesn't leak. Mine seeps a little bit when it sits for a long time. My pump leaks, lines leak, resevoir leaks (somehow, don't ask me how), etc. At least you have one thing that doesn't leak.

I think I am going to replace the tie rod ends while I have it all apart anyway.

With my luck the rack will start to leak after I have everything back together.
