Default 968 3.0L + 6spd swap

I have a dream, and I have a nice sum of cash in the "Porsche fund" so I'm wondering how realistic my dream is.

Just looking for a parts list that I would need to get the 968 3.0L and the 6spd into my '83 944... Mostly looking for the not-so-obvious things that I would miss, but you know the deal.

Thanks in advance, hopefully I don't get flamed for wanting to dump money into an 83 N/a, no, I don't want a turbo -flame suit on-

wow another 944 S3 builder. I think it is a cool project but do not know much about it. I always say if my engine ever blew or went for some reason i would consider doing that.

Good Luck and keep us updated on how the project is going.

I dropped a 968 engine in my 924S this summer, but did not go with the 6-speed tranny. Search my screen name and you will find a very long thread detailing the swap. Also check out www.944s3.com which was a great help.

Good luck.

http://www.944s3.com

Didn't do the 6 speed. Not sure what I think about it. Way to much fun with the gearing of the 5 speed and the only time I ever wish for that overdrive is on the highway -- if you do a lot of highway driving, go for the 6 speed -- otherwise, go for the 5 speed and save 4 grand.

Good luck.

Isn't the clutch on the 6 speed much easier to do? Just wondering, as this is what I've heard from the general consensus.

Yes, however, if I did it all over again, I'd spend the money that I'd save from the 6-speed (was never an option for me) in going with the 5-speed, and spend it on a S2 SPEC clutch and S2 SPEC lightweight flywheel (SPEC is supposidly coming out with the latter soon). Clutch would then be golden for MANY MANY miles before you had to get in there and change.

Yes, no need to drop the tranny and pull the t-tube back.

Or pull the engine forward a bit. (Which may be easier!! )

Good point, I was planning on going with a SPEC clutch anyway.

So for some few track days, maybe some auto-x's here and there, what tranny would you pick?

EDIT: Even my stock clutch lasted 150,000+ miles and 20+ some odd years before it went, earlier this year.

I dropped the Spec Stage 3 clutch (6 puck) in the trackcar. Not sure that I would want it for street use. I didn't go with the lightweight flywheel but did drop the extra for the lightweight clutch.

I went with the 951 tranny, mainly because you can get them with LSD and oil cooler for about 1K. That tranny is a bit long for track use, but the wheel tire combo that I run is more than an inch in diameter less than stock, thereby effectively shortening the gearing.

I guess you don't drive your car on the street, but if you do, how does it feel with the 951 tranny? Lacking?

I think a 951 or S2 tranny would be the way to go if you are in the position that you are going to swap the tranny. I wasn't financially so I stuck with what was in there... I'm sure the 951 could hold up to more abuse though.

Nope, not lacking at all, but weighing in at 2,350 lbs helps alot
