The 924S and the early 944 are the same gauges with different faces (white-on-black as opposed to yellow-on-black). I believe the straight 924 has a different oil pressure gauge (0-8 bar as opposed to 0-5 bar) which would need to be different. I think the others are the same.
I have the 924S gauges (white-on-black) for my early n/a just because it's very difficult to match the color/layout/look of the yellow-on-black early gauge faces for stuff like boost gauges, EGT gauges and AFM gauges (white-on-black is common and looks better/simpler for my needs).

Thanks for info.
One thing though. My 85 has the stupid MPG in with the RPM gauge. The 924 guages im looking at doesn't. I belive I have 2 row of terms on RPM, and the 924 w/0 MPG only has one row of terms on back of RPM gag.
Whataya think?

Must be off a straight 924. I'm pretty sure those didn't have the MPG thingy whereas the 924S and early '44s did. Your choice then - you can find a 924S one to retain the MPG thing or transplant in the straight 924 one you've got and either fold back the extra harness or cut the wires. Personally I'd just look for a 924S one - they're on Ebay all the time. Or simply get a white-on-black gauge face for that one instrument. That's just my $0.02 though - up to you.

Ok, you're going to need 924s gauges. The one row on terminals I think is a regular 924 gauge and is by no means a bolt on, the plugs are way different, I tried. I'm almost done converting all my gauges to 924s, I don't actually think any of the normal 924 gauges will work, maybe the speedo. The 924s tach has two rows of plugins in the back even though there is no mpg gauge(at least on mine) I'm just deleting that whole gauge, I think it is dumb. Tach is cleaner looking this way.

Oh no, too late. I did a bid on a set of 3 mains from a 924 earlier and wound up winning them. See pics below. I wonder if I can retro the harness to work? Might not be worth the trouble though. I really don't want the MPG thingy on the RPM gauge anyway.
Anyone out there done this sucssesfully?

I heard that the 924 and 944 speedos are uncompatible because of the way the speedometer is geared, not sure if its true or not, but i would like to get a white on black speedometer. my main and tach were already converted by the PO. Would I have to get a 924S speedometer or would a 924 speedometer work also?
sorry for the semi-hijack...

well the combo gauge should work just fine, looks just like the one I installed and the connectors look the same. The tach will not work without a lot of wiring mods and even then... Dunno about the speedo.

Well, I think I can make it work with testing of a multi-meter but I doubt I will go that far. I ask the seller to let me slide since in there descript. they had 944/924. If not I'll pay the $50 and sell them later. Im sure I can get that out of 3 good gauges. Prolly even to a good ole renn buddy?

Gauges on the picture are 924S, NOT early 924. They should be compatible without any mods with 944. Easy way to distinguish betwen 924 / 924S is turn signal indicator lamp. In 924 it is located in the cental speedo while in case of 924S it is located in combo. Also arrows are thicker in case of 924S.
Just change it and You will be fine.

The idiot light cluster prongs look similar to my 83's when I had the dash out this summer. You may want to test the lights, you wouldn't want a dead oil pressure light if the car did have low pressure someday.
The speedo will need a recalibration by a VDO shop, since it's set to run off of narrower 924 tires.
Not sure about the tach, I don't remember how that looked on the 83. It looks something like I remember, but no guarantees.

those are not 924s gauges, the plug connector on the tach is way wrong, and the speedo is as well. I wonder if they didn't switch at some point and put the signal light in the combo gauge, I do have a 924 speedo laying around with the signal in it.
