freekin headlights
well I have been noticing lately that when I turn off the head lights they flip down. then back up, then back down......... WTF??? I unplugged the wire from the motor to stop it and switched out the relay thinking that mayu be the problem. Now nothing. It doesnt work at all. Im guessing I need a new headlight motor. Anyone have any idea?

Believe it or not, everytime I had this problem, it was the relay. Are you sure the relay you plugged in is good?
You might want to clean the contacts on the original relay an re-install it. Check the other electrical connectors.

I thought I would bring life to this old thread because I bought nathan944 87' 944S. I've taken care of alot of the "gremlins" and now I'm working on the headlight motor issue. It looks like something has been unplugged from the motor and I'm not sure what. There is a smaller plug beside it also that is intact. Does anyone have a pic to go by. I don't see anything loose nearby to plug into it. The lights works...just will not lower and raise. The linkage seems to be fine, there is no drag when I raise and lower using the **** on the motor. I can have a pic of it in the morning if it will help.

yeah, the relay is missing. it is on my black 86 as well. I took it out. use this method.
with lights on turn off your car.
turn lights to off pos.
when you turn your lights off and they reach the bottom
click them to the running lights pos. as they reach the bottom.
then turn it back to off.
they will stay down then.
In college I went to bed and seven hours later the lights were still going up/down! the motor was quite warm!

I'm kinda afraid that's why it was pulled out in the first place. I'm going on a group ride Sunday...maybe I'll just wait till then, maybe someone let me try a loaner relay to see what happens.
If the linkage is is a bind..will I feel it drag when I use the hand ****. It seems to turn nice and smooth so I am assuming the linkange is not in a "kink"

If there are two relays in this system, maybe Nathan bought the wrong one for that spot, maybe that's why it didn't work. At any rate, the relay should definitely be the first thing you try. Especially given the cost and effort difference in replacing a relay and replacing a motor. Relays need periodic replacement just like any other part, so it won't hurt to have a new one on hand even if you end up not needing it.
