Default Oil Pressure Pegg'd at 5, even with car off

I know this isn't the actual oil pressure, but I'm ordering parts for a tune up, random gauges, screws, and other engine components and the oil pressure sender is $30 right now. My oil pressure gauge is pegged permanently at 5, yet when I start the car it drops to 0 while the engine is cranking (all other gauges do it, and the warning lights are all on). So this tells me the gauge isn't stuck. We tried switching the leads on the sender and this didn't fix the problem. Can I say for sure its the sender and buy another one?

Try reversing the wires on the sending unit.

Worked for me

Yep, we tried that. It does exactly the same thing now.

Is it an early or late car?

Should have mentioned that, its an 89 944S2. I haven't actually put a gauge in but my mechanic told me he did and it showed normal oil pressure. My thoughts were either a gauge ground or the sender. I might just go ahead and order a sender for the sake of having it when I go to fix the issue.

Before you buy the new sender make sure that both wires have continuity from the sender to the gauge. Mine was pegged and it turned out to be one of the wires was broken at lug connection at the sender. Easy fix.

my car-last nite- my gauge was jumping all over, so i put an early sender in it to try to fix it and it pegged to five. Found another correct sender and now its fine.
