Default odometer problems, not the gear

so my odometer has never been great, I in fact had the nasty little gear failure last year. Every now and then, it decides to stop working now. I have had the cluster out atleast 8 times to diagnose, and it always works after I reinstall the cluster. At some point though, it always freezes up for some reason. I have checked for tooth debris, many times.

Yet it still decides to freeze up at random. Anybody have experience and a solution? I am to the point where I might drive with a frankenstein cluster so I can watch the gears moving (or trying to move).

Check the wormgear that meshes with the coveted gear failure part? Sometimes it binds. That's what happened with mine. Do you have any grease on it?
