Default Manual Sunroof Conversion

New guy on the block... I purchased a 85.5 944 about a month ago that is in need of a lot of TLC. I am interested in converting the old style electric sunroof, due to a number of issues, into a manual, but am not sure about the parts (rear latches) needed and how well the fitment is after the conversion. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Stan

Hey Stan, welcome to Rennlist! There was just a thread on this a couple of weeks ago. Here's a link.

You just need the rear manual sunroof latches. You simply pull off the header panel above the back seat, then make a small incision over that panel (enought to pull out the old latch mechanism). It's pretty straight forward. They bolt right up. I did this on my 84 a while ago after a leaky sunroof issue.

let me know if you have any questions. I'll be glad to help.

Is the manual roof panel lighter than the power one?

I have a couple of manual sunroofs with all of the latches still on them. If anyone is interested.

Yeah, by about 5 pounds.

has anyone found that the sunroof liner off the power sunroof is not very compatible with rear latches?

Yes, ran into this when I converted mine. The manual inner panel has spaces that allow the latches to close completely. You could try one of the following:
  1. Cut these spaces into your power roof liner
  2. Fit a manual inner panel to your power roof (haven't tried this yet so I don't know if it would work for sure)
  3. Put a complete manual roof on your car if you can find one in your color or paint to match
