Default In Porsche heaven, with a heavenly wife!

I’m convinced that I am outta my mind, but, there is no doubt I have a wife who IS the most understanding, and wonderful partner one could ever hope for!

I’m considering purchasing a 914-4 from a pretty good co-worker at work right now. I’m gonna go look at it next Saturday to make sure it is what I think it is. It’s a long story, and I don’t even remember the year of it, right now (’75 or ’76?). I know it has a 1.8L in it, with a complete spare 2.0L engine (needs rebuilding…..so I’m told). I know the car won’t start, and hasn’t for at least a few of years, always garaged, and the “hell hole” is said to be a very slight problem, rust in rockers very minor, black on black, good paint, body, and interrior (has optional gauges on center console?), and my friend will even deliver it to my place on his trailer (he asked me about this car over a year ago, that his neighbor had, and he has not had a chance to do anything with it (he’s into 4X4’s), so he asks me if I’m still interested in it.

I currently have in my possesion, 3 running 944’s , and 3, 944 parts cars. I really don’t even have the room in my garage for this 914, and I’m far from having all the bugs worked outta the runners I have! I’m gonna have to do some shifting around again, I guess. But I WILL find room for it, and my wife is OK with me doing this if I want! Price is 1K for the car, my wife……..PRICELESS! I AM a lucky man!

Oh boy! What AM I getting into! Now I gotta get manuals and up to speed (somewhat at least) on these cars! I just gotta get her on the road and run it out! I know these are just roller skate cars, and I’m dying to have one of these cars also. Excellence mag, just gave a favorable re-sale value on these cars also.

Just had to say something, since my wife didn’t shoot me, when I brought up this possibility!

I’m always looking for that “great deal” on a 911, 928, or 951 too. I hope this all pans out with this 914.

It's fantastic that you have such an understanding wife.

Ken, I know exactly where your at. I've been sitting on a 78' VW Bus with a 2.2l that I built that I'm starting to consider buying a 914 to drop it in.

Although my wife's excitemant prolly wouldn't extend to her being a record breaking beer runner but she would love to see something a little more "exotic" in the drive than the 944/951's.

I have been looking at 914s since I looked at the Renegade Hybrids website. They have a kit for putting a Subaru engine into the 914. The 2.5L NA subie engine puts out 160hp, the stock 914-6 put out 110hp. The NA engines can be had for $500-$1k used. If you have a good chassis/bad engine 914 seems like you could have quite a car for less than $5k. Well, that is what I have been thinking about recently.

Keep the wife, sell some of the cars!

Is it really worth all the hassle to gain only 50hp? Renegade charges too much $$$$$ for the kits the sell.

There is a person here that squized an ealy 928 V8 into a 914. The 928 S 16V ranges between 220 - 310 HP. The 220hp and 234hp engines are dirt chap, the Euro 16V with the 310HP are the expensive ones. Regardless of the choice it's still alot better than a 160hp Subaru.

I saw the 914 with the 928 engine in it. Very impressive. My thinking is that the subaru duplicates the original H4 engine layout and therefore does not mess with raising the center of gravity the way a 928 or SBC would change the CG. If 160hp isn't enough you can also go for the WRX turbo at 220hp. That should be plenty of power without increasing the weight of the car the way a V8 would. The subie is an extension of the original VW four banger brought up to date with water cooling and meeting modern emissions. Emissions is what killed the 914 4, along with the on coming 924...

Dan, I saw some of your posts about painting your 914 but I did not know if if was finished. edit: found the thread, you did a great job on that car!

Renegade Hybrids makes a kit to put the Subie motors into the 914. Thats one of my "eventually" cars, the 914 with the 300 hp WRX STi motor.

Ken,

Sometimes they surprise you. We currently have 8 cars, of which 5 are Porsches, my wife has just become complacent to them, she loves them, but not like me.. She does get a kick out of when someone sees her in a Porsche hat or something, and makes the obligatory comment we have all heard, " You actually have one, or just buy the hat" . LOL

Good luck with the 914.... I never have had one of those, maybe one of these days... HMMMMMMM
