Unhappy 944 versus 928 oil filter

This came up in another thread and I found something about this that I thought people should know about.

I've got both models and compared the filters. A Mahle 142 for the 944 has a drain back valve. A Mahle 46 for a 928 does not. The 928 filter mounts from underneath and stays full. The 944 filter mounts from the top and, without the valve, will empty.

Using the 928 filter will make the 944 engine run without pressure for those seconds it takes to fill that monster. It holds about a quart.

I'll be sticking to the filters spec'd for the cars. Was really hoping to simplify a bit and buy just the one type. That big 928 filter would have helped boost oil pressure, I'd expect.

There is a Mahle 75, which fits the 944 but is as long as the 928 Filter. It has the valve. Hard to find though.
