Metal frags in trans

Metal frags in trans
Yep, drained the fluid tonight and with a magnetic p/u tool, I retrieved a lot of metal frags along the bottom of the transaxle. Looks like I'll be needing a good used one to swap it out.
I looked for the transaxle model code as stated on Clarks, but I don't see any numbers on the top ridge of gear box. I do see numbering on the pass side rear of box. Funny thing, It is stamped with VW and the Audi sign in two places on the psaa side. There is also a date code of sort.
FJG 2 11 83 is what I make it out to be
The car is an early 85 that was made in late 84. So I guess one of the PO's must have been down this road too.
What transaxle should I be focusing on for the replacement? What years will bolt up and be usable with no mods?
Thanks in advance,

bout any of the trans will fit...you just wont use the electric speedo hookup from the later trans. I would get a late N/A trans -(not s2/968 or turbo because of gearing)- those seem to hold up better. Or get another early trans for cheaper.

88NA trans is the one to find, they aparrently used the ROW(rest of world) trans with a beefier R&P while maintaining NA gearing. It will have the late mount and the electronic speedo, you'll just use the holes for the early mounts on the sides. Good luck
