thank you all for helping me so far diagnosing this. It's always great to see the gears of rennlist turning

I am getting prices as we speak for radiator and hoses. Even if it's not the radiator, I would still like to have one among my stockpile of parts at home to replace mine in the car in the event of a cracked side tank.

Stig - good to hear it's most likely not the WP.

Before you start ripping stuff apart, pressure test the system. That will rule out any hose leaks. (Then pressure test the system AFTER replacing all the stuff to ensure you still have no leaks!)

Hey Z I think it's safe to say my car is at a point where EVERY hose needs to be replaced on the sucker In all the 19 years, many components with the exception of the water pump, thermostat, upper radiator hose and coolant reservoir haven't been replaced. At the moment, I'm having the "oh screw this, replace everything" attitude for the cooling system

BTW... a bad tank will not leak from pressure testing. I have been there/done that.

The "flip it over and check for leaks" is best way to determine that.

Getting a new radiator is not really a bad thing. If you do track days in the heat then having a fresh waterpump and fresh radiator are very nice to keep the engine temps in check.

The "while I'm in there" items may add up, but it is certainly worth doing it all at once. It will pay off in the long run.

Replace the coolant tank cap with a new one. See if that helps.

When they get old they cant hold the pressure (15PSI or so). Guess where the coolant gets to go?

AJUSA sells the correct hose clamps as a kit for the car - and they are in town (SD).

I got a replacement radiator on ebay for ~$200 new. Only obvious problem I see with it is the drain plug (which isn't as nice as the original porsche part).

The lower hose that goes to the water pump is the one that is regulated by the thermostat. If the hose is cool, than your thermostat is stuck closed.

the car is not mixing thats why i'm not considering a head gasket. And, if the head gasket was leaking and compression was overpressurizing the cooling system, wouldn't the coolant be spilling all over while the car is at speed and in motion? My car didn't leak one drop of coolant after parking it at work and school until last night when i parked it in the garage and left it running 2 minutes to adjust the idle.

You do realize there is many different ways/combinations of a headgasket failing. It can be bad without mixing. mine was. why not do a compression test? it won't hurt whatsoever. It's better than throwing money at radiators.

didnt you have the car apart once already? Could you just not have bled it out properly and it had a pocket of air that expaned more quickly than the antifreeze and pushed itself out through the tank. It would read normal unless the pocket was on the gauge sensor which would make it appear to be overheating when it wasnt.

Why don't you throw in a thermostat when you do that, because I seriously think that is the cause of your problems. If the lower radiator hose is not getting up to temp as you describe, it is likely the thermostat is stuck. If it wasn't stuck closed before, it will be after your little overheat fiasco.

" OH MY GOD.....Coolant all over garage floor after trip home!! HELP!!!! "

Tis not a big deal. Wipe up the mess, slow down, and start again. SOMETHING got missed along the way. A coolant pressure tester is in your future.........don't ya think? Good luck! it really isn't a big deal. Get yourself a coolant pressure tester. Save yourself a WHOLE lot of grief.
