did a thread a while ago on turbo cup cars. It came out that there are golf/rabbit mirrors...

Im not sure they are identical to the VW/Golf mirrors, i.e. the base mounts.

They are still available if you want to buy them new. Not real cheap, but if you want them bad enough.....

I am pretty sure the base on the "cup" mirror is different from the Rabbit mirror. The "cup" mirror is merely the manual early 944/late 924 mirror. I am pretty sure the Rabbit mirror is more like the very early 924 manual mirror which has a different base, more narrow and long versus the base from the later manual mirror which is more triangular like the power mirror base.

Oh, and from my somewhat limited searching, the manual 944 mirrors are getting hard to find new and are probably broken (the pot metal base) used.

The VW mirrors are not the same as the 944 mirrors, which are listed in PET for the late models as Clubsport mirrors. As Manning suggested, the bases are different (I have compared them back-to-back).

The parts you need are:
477 857 522 D (Clubsport mirror, R) $170.44
477 857 521 D (Clubsport mirror, L) $147.67
477 857 579 (mirror base basket) $4.13
478 857 579 (mirror base gasket) $3.99

999 067 026 07 (Hex head bolt) 2@ $4.95(optional!!)

The part #s for the mirrors represent plain glass instead of the convex glass. These are NIB prices from Sunset Imports. They will probably ship from Germany which puts them 4-6 weeks away.

Alright as someone who quested for these...here is what you will find.
Mirror and housing same as VW Gti of that era(sharp horizontal peak on front side, not smoother standard housing)
Base is completely different.
Try to service them(replace or clean glass) good luck.(pins will snap)
Manual mechanism. Can be retrofitted easily enough. If you do not keep the control you will have to find some way of binding the cables together tightly or the mirror will just flop.
They mount just fine.
Different base gasket from flag.
Unless you are going for a cup replica or OE track style. Get something else.
My two cents.

I agree with the "get something else" comment. I have these mirrors on my car and have for 4 or 5 years now and can say from experience that they are tiny and do not offer good visability. The mirror on the passenger side is so useless that I often wonder if I would be better off finding a 924SE door and go without the mirror altogether.

As Ken stated, yes they do seem to have to come from Germany. I ordered a replacement a few months ago and it took maybe two months to receive them because they had to come from the fatherland. BTW, I had to order a replacement because the base cracked on the driver's side mirror. They are fragile. I have also already replaced the passenger side once as well.

What sort of other manual mirror options are there out there that look decent? I'm trying to get rid of all unnecessary electrical pieces in my car because the PO really screwed up the wiring throughout the whole car. (I'll also be converting to manual windows soon!)

Yeah, those are neat. Basically the same guts as the old style manual mirrors but with the sleek aero housing.

is it just me that thinks the 968 mirrors take away from the 944's boxiness?

tifo your car is awesome except for those mirrors.

do the aero mirrors offer any more visibility than the stock 944 flag mirrors? i would love to have manual mirrors with the areo housing.

the aero mirrors are convex and give a little more field of vision than the flag mirrors.

having had both mirrors, I would take the aeros over the flags any day of the week.
