951 Engine in 968?

951 Engine in 968?
I was curious if anyone has done this swap. Is it possible? What parts would I need? I know a 968 engine works in a 944 with the S2 tranny, but would a 951 engine work with either an S2 tranny or a 951 tranny in a 968? I like to 968 engine, but I would prefer the turbo since I don't have the money to do a turbo 3.0. Thanks.

not sure, but i'm almost positive that a turbo swap into a 968 will cost more than turbo'ing a 968 motor. unless you've got a spare, working 951 motor lying around, and can fab yourself motor mounts, probably an oil pan, bellhousing, etc. then again, i've never done it, so i could be talking out of my ***.

Motor mounts? Oil pan? Are you thinking about a 928 or something? These are the same on the 944/968.
If you put a turbo motor into a 968 you would need to switch to the 951 bellhousing, clutch, starter and torque tube, assuming you plan to use a 951 DME.

Ted is looking into doing this right now...do a search or scroll down a bit on this forum and you should see his post along with a few other comments regarding people's thoughts.

So it is feasible? I would probably try to get it running using a Megasquirt and a custom crank trigger. What should I do for a tranny? Use a 968 tranny, or just do a complete drivetrain swap with an 951? How much custom work do you think would be involved? Thanks again.

Why use the SA EMS? The way that Vitesse has reverse-engineered the motronic code, the reasons for using SA are very few. A 951 DME and KLR setup with his software and MAF will work very well. Also, you can not even put a price on the support he offers.
There are a lot of different approaches you can take. Drop me an email sometime. trwright@gmail.com

Agree with Ted and Tifo on this one. It is BY FAR cheaper to swap in the 944T motor. Hell, the 968 motor alone will net you more than the cost of the conversion if you dont have a 951 motor. I looked at doing this too but I missed out on my shell.

IIRC the 968 torque tube is a different length and would need to be changed to 951 along with the previously mentioned flywheel, clutch and bellhousing.

So just dropping in an entire 951 driveline would be fairly painless right? Engine, flywheel, clutch, bell housing, torque tube, tranny, linkage, all from a 951. Anything else you guys can think of? I really would like to go megasquirt, primarily because of how cheap I could have a full standalone ems. It would be cheaper than going DME with a MAF upgrade and have much more potential. Anyone have a complete driveline they want to sell me?

I'm glad I found this thread. I recently wrecked my 86 951 and bought a 94 968 Tiptronic coupe to transfer the 951 engine & drivetrain into.
The idea of a turbo Tiptronic intrigues me (no spooling up after each shift), but with ~320 BHP, the rubber flex plate would need to be upgraded to solid. I think the Tip reads some parameters from the 968 DME, so it may not play well with the 951 DME. I'll probably just use the 5-speed.
I would like to keep the electric water pump for the turbo, but I'm not sure how difficult it would be to retrofit the 968 with the required circuitry.
So, anyone wanna buy a good 968 engine & Tiptronic?
